Actor Logan Lerman says he’d be interested in playing Poseidon in the upcoming TV adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The actor originally played the title character in the movie adaption of the same book series. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a young adult book series by Rick Riordan that follows Percy Jackson, a young boy with ADHD and dyslexia who finds out that he is the son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. He learns that living life as a demigod is pretty complicated, as he is constantly hunted by monsters, manipulated by gods and running away from prophecies. The series is extremely popular among readers of all ages, and has been on the New York Times bestsellers list for over 10 years. Percy Jackson managed to spawn two sequel series, The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians was soon given the Hollywood treatment, as Fox attempted to create a movie franchise out of the series. The first two books, The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters, were adapted into films. The movies received mixed reviews, but the biggest criticisms came from the fans of the original novels. The movies were panned for not being faithful to the source material, from aging the leads, omitting important characters and altering key storylines. Even author Rick Riordan has revealed that he disliked the direction the films were going in during development, and has refused to them to this day.

Riordan recently announced that the series would be given a second chance, as it is being adapted into a live-action TV show for Disney+ and that he and his wife will be largely involved in the show’s development. This led to a flurry of fan-casting for the dozens of characters in the series. Many fans suggested that Logan Lerman, the actor who played Percy Jackson in the films, should return to the franchise but as Poseidon. Lerman is often considered one the bright spots of the two films, as he gave a solid performance and largely resembled Percy’s physical description from the books. When asked by Entertainment Tonight if he would like to play Poseidon on the Disney+ series, Lerman said he would interested in playing the sea god or even another character on the show, saying “I’m curious if there’ll be a role that would be interesting for me. or something like that, I’ve definitely considered it it sounds cool… I mean I love those stories.” Lerman also noted that regardless of his potential involvement, he is happy that the fans will receive a faithful adaptation after being disappointed by the movies.

The TV show is still very much in early development, as no casting director or writers have been announced. Rick Riordan has revealed that each season will be an adaptation of one novel in the series, so the show will potentially have five seasons. If the show is successful, its possible that Disney will consider adapting the two sequel book series, as well as Riordan’s other novels like The Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.

Adapting young adult novels to the screen has been a trend in Hollywood for almost two decades. However, it is often a coin toss as to whether the adaptions work or not, and rarely are these properties revisited after initially failing. Hopefully Percy Jackson and the Olympians will follow the success of adaptations like The 100 and less like Shadowhunters.
