“Tucci Gang” wryly celebrates the Oscar-nominated character actor Stanley Tucci, of films such as The Terminal, The Lovely Bones, and The Devil Wears Prada. Perhaps most charming is the fact that Tucci is portrayed by fellow supporting man Sam Rockwell, who was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar back-to-back in 2018 and 2019.

Larry David’s history with Saturday Night Live is one long and strange. His temporary quitting from the show as a writer in the 1980s became a Seinfeld plotline. In recent years, the role of Bernie Sanders has been his domain.

Somewhere in between was a hosting gig and his turn Kevin Roberts, the self-proclaimed “coolest bitch in town”. Only in a sketch built on pure absurdism could Pete Davidson thrive in the straight man role, as he joyously does here alongside the venerable Kenan Thompson. The dress rehearsal outtakes from this now cult classic are as hilarious as the canon content.

8 Chad & JLo

One character which Pete Davidson can call his own is Chad, an impeccable dullard who says little except “ok” and occasionally chuckles at an unintentional innuendo even as he is pursued by beautiful women and midnight slashers alike.

Late 2019 host Jennifer Lopez is a good sport as swooning love interest to Chad. She falls more and more deeply in love and lust as he burps, farts, blunders off the stage, and awkwardly grinds a stool. The romantic encounter is ultimately busted up, bringing the sketch to a close with JLo’s high-profile partner also being a good sport.

7 Weekend Update: Pete Davidson on Colin Jost, Michael Che (Hosting Emmys)

Pete Davidson coming on to Weekend Update to discuss the upcoming Emmys with hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che is another phenomenal example of SNL as Hollywood spectacle. These three are co-workers and friends, but they also are in a position to do things like host major television events and then make fun of them right on the same network.

And of course, Davidson makes it hilarious. He compares Jost and Che to “a rabbit and a squirrel”, makes race jokes, hopes they fail, and per usual, gets entirely off course several times.

6 Meet Cute

For his arguable scarcity on SNL, Pete Davidson is one of the most well-known current cast members. His upcoming film will reveal more about his elusive but undeniable bankability. Alongside ever-rising megastar Kristen Stewart and playing both romance and comedy relatively honestly, one must admit Davidson doesn’t look out of place.

The plot of “Meet Cute” is straightforward and none of the digital short is uproarious, but much like a Hollywood rom-com, it’s the side characters and one-liners that stick with you.

SNL knows when to draw on the lackadaisical allure of Davidson, even if it means sacrificing a straight-faced performance and any characterization. He juxtaposes perfectly here with Adam Driver, the reportedly self-serious thespian here playing Abraham H. Parnassus with all the intensity he’d bring to an Oscar-level performance.

The two are a hysterical father-son pair. If familiar in that one is a blowhard masculine type and the latter an embarrassed, resistant underachiever, they are original in Parnassus Sr.’s’ walloping of a dead bird to depict the crushing of his enemies into the ground.

4 Scarlett Johansson Monologue (2019)

In the first few episodes of the most recent season of Saturday Night Live, Pete Davidson was conspicuously missing. While all cast members miss episodes when their material doesn’t make the final show cut, Davidson’s hectic personal life and trademark honesty led many viewers to wonder exactly what was wrong.

For the second-to-last episode before the holiday break, Scarlett Johansson hosted. Her monologue was of the walk-around-Studio-8H variety and found the show’s cast members turning into dust, à la Avengers: Infinity War. Then, in a hilarious and self-aware reversal, it is revealed that Davidson himself, toying around with a Thanos glove, had been making everyone disappear.

3 Weekend Update Home Edition: Pete Davidson on Hooking Up During Quarantine

SNL at Home’s three episodes were an impressive response to conditions entirely detrimental to the nature of the legendary series. As each episode is written and developed in a week, the extra considerations taken to bring sketches to life from separate buildings are unimaginable.

Besides contributing more hip-hop videos, Pete Davidson was reliable as himself on Weekend Update, musing uninterestedly on the state of love amid global quarantining. Most mock-insightful are his comments on “booty smoocheroos” which send Colin Jost, and most other remote viewers, into fits.

2 Diner Lobster

A man attempting to go about his day only to set off a surrounding circus of hilarity is an appropriate role for Pete Davidson. Upon ordering a lobster off of one of those limitless diner menus, music from Les Misérables sets in and a half-submerged Kenan Thompson in a lobster costume is rolled onto the set. The rest is a frenzy of broadway reimagining and continued prodding of Davidson for the bizarre pick.

“Diner Lobster” was an instant classic and an exclamation point on the triumphant return of offscreen writer turned comedy superstar John Mulaney. In a subsequent Mulaney outing in 2020, the sketch formula was recycled to address airport sushi.

1 Riverdale

The sniggering, sarcastic Pete Davidson who, when not playing himself, is often playing some slight variation on himself, is nowhere to be found in “Riverdale”. In an episode with Halsey pulling double-duty, the sketch begins as a topical parody of the CW teen melodrama of the same name, and then Lionel Rodgers is introduced.

Davidson goes full-fledged into this character, who specializes in portraying corpses for television in the most realistic possible manner. The setup alone is enough to draw a laugh and Davidson’s execution is unforgettable. If SNL writers can keep his attention with similar silliness, look forward to more of this level of comedy from the 26-year old.
