Phase 4 Already Has The Perfect Way To Bring Back Bernthals Punisher

Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe already has the perfect opportunity to feature the return of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in the forthcoming series Moon Knight. Bernthal first played the role of the vigilante in Daredevil season 2 before starring in a solo spinoff series. Despite Bernthal’s portrayal as a live-action Frank Castle, The Punisher was axed at Netflix after Marvel Television was taken over by Marvel Studios. As Disney attempts to rebuild Marvel’s presence through TV series, there are plenty of ways to reincorporate figures like Bernthal’s Punisher.

Based on the Marvel Comics character by the same name, Frank appeared in Daredevil season 2 as a veteran-turned-vigilante hellbent on avenging the death of his family. By the end of the season, the hardened man joined forces with Matt Murdock before returning to his solo mission. In The Punisher’s two-season run, Frank the vigilante known as “the Punisher.” He then uncovered a larger conspiracy involving his family while struggling with the effects that come with being a recognized watchdog.

Even though Netflix’s Marvel TV shows tried to fit into MCU continuity, the arcs of the characters seemed to come to an end when the titles were canceled. Now, Marvel Studios is in the midst of developing a new slate of programming for Disney+, which will feature more significant tie-ins to the cinematic universe. WandaVision will launch the list of shows while also serving as the official start to Phase 4 when it debuts in January 2021. Other planned series set for the near future include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight. The latter of which could be a perfect fit if Marvel Studios had any plans to bring the Punisher back into live-action.

Why The Punisher Should Appear In Moon Knight

Ever since Netflix’s Marvel programming was shut down, fans were adamant for the studio to bring back certain characters in future projects. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil was high on the list, and interestingly enough, his name is popping up in Spider-Man 3 rumors. While the same goes for Bernthal, it would make more sense for the Punisher to appear in Moon Knight. The series, set for 2022, will follow the life of Marc Spector taking on the moniker of Moon Knight with Oscar Isaac tapped for the role. The character has been described as Marvel’s version of Batman, seeing as he’s a millionaire entrepreneur who doubles as a mercenary.

Like Frank, Marc was commonly driven by vengeance during his comic book arcs as a vigilante. He was also known for suffering from personality disorders. Frank, of course, had his own personal struggles after the loss of his family. Having the two cross paths (or even team up) in Moon Knight would be a fun way to incorporate the Punisher into the new wave of Marvel programming. Interestingly enough, Frank and Marc have a history of teaming up in the comics after bonding due to their vigilantism. Bernthal is already open to returning as the Punisher, but the ball is now in Marvel’s court as Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe gears up for the big launch.
