Developer Kinetic Games has announced the release date for Phasmophobia’s Cursed Possessions update, confirming that ghost hunters will be able to play with summoning circles, Tarot cards, and other cursed possessions later this week. The popular indie horror game launched on Steam Early Access in 2020 and quickly rose to fame thanks to its randomized ghost scenarios, cooperative multiplayer, and consistent creep-filled updates. In October, Phasmophobia’s massive Nightmare update added a lot to the game such as a haunted campsite, two new ghosts, and an unforgiving new difficulty mode.

Kinetic Games’ next Phasmophobia update was originally listed on the game’s official development Trello board as a Christmas update, and was pegged as a minor expansion due to release at the end of 2021. Attached to the update’s listing were four new cursed possessions, including a summoning circle, a voodoo doll, and two other redacted entities. The update was also said to be adding new Ouija Board questions and a few extra unannounced additions. Teasers for the anticipated summoning circle feature revealed that the cursed possession will allow players to summon ghosts in Phasmophobia, forcing them to appear in the marked area when activating the circle.

The previously-teased Phasmophobia Christmas update finally has a release date (via ComicBook), with players not having long to wait to access the new content. Now officially listed on Trello as Phasmophobia’s Cursed Possessions Update, the holiday expansion will drop on December 10, though the exact time has not been revealed. Cursed Possessions is still listed as a “Minor Update,” though it is confirmed to be adding four new cursed possessions including “Tortured Voodoo Doll,” “Summoning Circle,” “Music Box,” and “Tarot Cards.” Kinetic Games is also improving ghost identities, “updating some of the ghost types that don’t feel unique enough, as well as ones that are really hard to identify on Nightmare difficulty.”

Hopes are high for the new content, and the quality-of-life improvements set to be introduced are particularly noteworthy. Phasmophobia’s previous Nightmare update, which added the Phasmophobia The Twins ghost type and Nightmare difficulty mode, was a hit with fans, but introduced a set of enhanced challenges with identification. The Twins are especially difficult to identify due to their unique behavior and mechanics, in which they alternate their attacks to confuse players. Other ghost types can also be difficult to identify in Nightmare mode, so the new Cursed Possessions update should work to enhance the in-game experience, while not completely derailing the intended challenge.

It’s still unclear how the four new cursed possessions will be incorporated into Phasmophobia, and whether players will be able to equip a summoning circle as gear prior to a match, or if it’s an object found inside haunted locations, similar to Phasmophobia’s Ouija Board. It won’t be much longer until the answers are revealed, however, with Phasmophobia’s Cursed Possessions update right around the corner. Fans can keep an eye on the developer’s social channels to find out what time the new content will go live.
