As if it was not already scary enough, Phasmophobia just got a new update that makes ghosts even more active. The change is the latest update to the very popular co-op ghost hunting simulator, which received a brand-new prison map just this last month, one of the many new maps planned for the game.

Phasmophobia was one of 2020’s surprise indie hits, coming from a sole developer and exploding onto the scene after streamers and content creators picked up the Early Access version around Halloween. The game pits up to four players against an AI-controlled ghost with the goal being to identify the ghost and make it out alive. The ghost will frequently hunt and kill players, adding a real sense of urgency to the game while also making it a far scarier co-op experience. It was such a hit on launch that it went on to win best debut game at last month’s Game Awards.

Development has continued since then and in the most recent update, developer Kinetic Games notes that ghosts will now listen for player voices while haunting and search them out. The searching behavior is based on the loudness of each player’s microphone, encouraging players to whisper to one another during the hunt to avoid being caught. The change has just rolled out to the beta build and is currently experimental pending player testing to see if there are any problems.

The voice update is based on how loud your mic is. So you will be able to whisper during a hunt.

Lots of people thought it was a feature so it has been added 😉 https://t.co/uHnE7MNrQe

It is a minor change all things considered – just like the update that allowed players to throw objects as ghosts – but many were surprised to learn that this was not already a part of the game. This prompted the developer to clarify that the reason for its addition was due to how many thought it was an actual feature, adding that the old behavior only had ghosts appear/interact in the game after hearing player voices and only now can they actually use those voices to locate players.

Although currently an experimental feature, this is likely to make the game much more difficult. It already felt like the ghosts were using voices to locate players as it was, so having that made official is really going to change how haunts work. Being able to whisper to other players is a nice touch though and will definitely up the overall immersion. Phasmophobia may still be in Early Access, but it is shaping up for a solid full release, dependent on where the developer decides to take the game.
