Pixar 5 Of The Funniest (& 5 Saddest) Moments In The Toy Story Series

For decades now, Pixar has been revolutionizing animation and animated cinema, and throughout its illustrious feature filmography, the studio has a collection of some of the greatest movies ever made. Right at the forefront of that is the franchise which kicked off Pixar’s venture to feature filmmaking, Toy Story, undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary movie sagas ever.

In the Toy Story franchise, just like they do in nearly all their movies, Pixar manages to find a beautiful balance of the films being enjoyable for both kids and adults. With that, there are some absolutely drop-dead hilarious moments, but also moments that hit like an emotional freight train.

10 Funniest – Finding Out About Mrs. Potato Head

Across the four films of Toy Story, there is an insane amount of great characters, with more and more getting introduced with each movie. Two standout supporting characters are the Potato Heads.

Mr. Potato Head has some hilarious moments, but there may be none as simple and funny as when he finds out that a Mrs. Potato Head will be joining the group, and he shaves by removing his mustache and storing it away.

9 Saddest – Thrown Away Toys

This is more of a collection of different moments that are all revolving around the same thing, but they couldn’t not get mentioned as the throwing away/losing toys is one of the most heartbreaking threads in the franchise.

Jessie getting lost from her owner whom she loved, Wheezy and Bo-Peep getting given away, even Lotso and co getting lost, it is all sad, and whenever it gets brought up is always a misty-eyed moment.

8 Funniest – Meeting Ducky & Bunny (& Duke Caboom)

Pixar 5 Of The Funniest (& 5 Saddest) Moments In The Toy Story Series

As mentioned earlier, each of the Toy Story films introduces at least a few new characters to the universe. Two standouts to come from the latest iteration are Ducky and Bunny, played by the hilarious Key and Peele.

Their introduction and general presence of the two fluffy characters bring a great extra layer of humor to the film, and with the famous duo behind the characters, there was no doubting how good they were going to be. A special shoutout to Duke Caboom, also as Keanu Reeves, brought even more hilarity to the film during his introduction and subsequent scenes.

7 Saddest – Seeing Andy All Grown Up

Pixar 5 Of The Funniest (& 5 Saddest) Moments In The Toy Story Series

There was quite the gap between the second and third installments of the franchise, with the sequel released in 1999 and the third in 2010. In that time, not only did audiences who grew up with the first two films grow, so too did Andy.

Seeing Andy for the first time in Toy Story 3 is pretty heartbreaking. He is a young adult ready to head off for college, far removed from the young boy fans seen in 1995 and 1999. When it gets revealed, Andy has not played with the toys in a long time, and he picks them up and looks at them only to put them back in the box; it is sad and indicative of some of the pain that comes with change and growing up.

6 Funniest – Buzz Lightyears Alter Ego

Buzz Lightyear is one of the most iconic movie characters in all time, with a friendship – with Woody – and catchphrase to match. He is also a character with some hilarious moments.

One of the funniest, or rather a group of the funniest, is when Buzz is not quite Buzz. This happens a couple of times, but perhaps the most comical comes when Buzz becomes Spanish, and he proceeds to romance Jessie hilariously. There is also when he is set back to his factory settings, and when he is Ms. Nesbitt.

5 Saddest – The Furnace

To many fans, Toy Story 3 was the perfect end to a perfect trilogy, and the fourth film, despite its undoubtedly high quality, was pointless. It is hard to argue that when you see the end of the third entry.

When those toys, who fans had come to adore over a fifteen-year span, were on the brink of death, it was heartbreaking. The film makes you believe that is the end, and that they will go out together, and every time you rewatch it, hairs stand up, and eyes fill.

4 Funniest – “The Claw”

Of course, the beloved characters did not burn in the furnace; they were saved by the ever-hilarious aliens in one of the best callbacks ever, as they save their friends with “the claw.”

The claw first appears in Toy Story in a hilarious scene that introduces fans to the little green aliens with Buzz and Woody stuck in their machine. The aliens are such simple characters, but their delivery is always spot on.

3 Saddest – The Toys Going To Bonnie

After the furnace incident, it was hard to imagine the film getting anymore emotional than the painful ordeal audiences underwent. However, Pixar proved its magic once again by defying those expectations.

The end of the film sees Andy deliver his toys, including Woody, to Bonnie in a scene that is so incredibly overwhelming, both with heartbreak and satisfaction, that even a decade later, it still reduces you to tears.

2 Funniest – Buzz Lightyear Joining The Gang

Pixar 5 Of The Funniest (& 5 Saddest) Moments In The Toy Story Series

Buzz Lightyears alter egos got talked about earlier, and they were hilarious, but his original persona as a toy who believed himself to be a Space Ranger truly was hilarious also.

Not only was Woody and the gang’s reaction to Buzz funny, but Buzz had some great lines, the standout being when he is reporting to his wrist about how there was no intelligent life.

1 Saddest – Final(?) Goodbye

It is safe to say everybody believed the third installment of the franchise would be the last due to the nature of the ending, but with a fourth coming out which has another emotionally satisfying ending, there could be more films in time.

Nevertheless, the final goodbye at the end of this film is heartbreaking. The movie may not live up to the previous ones in most minds, but the ending with Woody going with Bo-Peep and saying goodbye to Buzz and the gang is enough to make anyone, young or old, cry.
