Pixel 5 Googles First 5G Flagship Phone Costs Just $699

Google added two new phones to its arsenal on Wednesday, including the long-awaited Pixel 5. The company’s new 5G flagship device was the highlight of the tech giant’s live stream, which featured a variety of products, including the 5G version of the Pixel 4a, a new streaming device and a smart speaker. What’s more, the price point is much lower than that of many other companies’ flagship devices.

The Pixel 5 is just the latest addition of Google’s phone line, which first launched back in 2013. While Google’s smartphones are not always top-end in terms of hardware, they’re popular due to their focus on software. Because Google makes the official version of Android, its phones always get a much cleaner install of the operating system. Pixel phones are bogged down by additional manufacturer apps that third-party smartphone manufacturers add to Android. Pixel phones are always the first in line to get Android updates or other new Google apps.

The new Pixel 5 ships with Android 11 already installed and it’s available at a great price too. At $699 (C$799 in Canada), Google’s new phone is one of the cheapest flagship 5G devices around, but how does it manage to pull that off? Well, the answer is simple. Its hardware isn’t nearly as high-end as the flagships of many of its competitors. The phone features a six-inch full HD+ OLED Smooth Display which likely offers a good quality image but can’t compare to some other devices on the market, such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 line. However, those phones are hundreds of dollars more. The Pixel 5 runs on the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G CPU, which has a clockspeed of up to 2.4 GHz on its fastest core, and comes with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. These are good quality specs for a mid-range phone but nothing out of the ordinary.

Pixel 5 Camera & Battery Life

At first glance, the cameras are also an area where the Pixel 5 appears to be at a disadvantage. The rear camera consists of a 16-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 12.2-megapixel dual pixel wide-angle lens. This is quite modest when nowadays, even mid-range devices often have three lens and flagships sometimes have four. Then again, the Pixel 5 comes with software that could bump it up in status. The cameras offer a variety new features not previously seen on Pixel phones. Some of these include adding Night Sight (its low-light exposure) to portrait mode and Portrait Light, a new feature that allows users to add light, blur the background or adjust the color pop of a photo after the fact. The Pixel 5 also adds new stabilization modes for shooting video, including a new cinematic pan. Some companies offer similar features for their phones’ cameras but these software solutions could prove to be a boon for Google lovers.

These more modest hardware specs help the Pixel 5 with its battery life. Google’s previous flagship phone, the Pixel 4, was widely criticized for its poor battery life. However, it only had a 2,800 mAh battery, while the new Pixel 5 has a much greater 4,080 mAh capacity. Furthermore, with a new Extreme Battery Saver feature, Google promises the Pixel 5 can last up to 48 hours. If that’s true, the Pixel 5 will be a great option for those who often forget to charge their phone overnight. Available for preorder now in Just Black and Sorta Sage, Google’s new Pixel 5 will be released in the U.S. October 15, and in Canada on October 29.
