Sony’s latest PlayStation 5 reveal stream included announcements and updates for several first- and third-party PS5 games, such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Simply titled PlayStation 5 Showcase, the event was also predicted to finally announce the PS5’s price, pre-order info, and release date, as it was teased as just “one more look” at the PlayStation 5’s games before launch, making it possibly Sony’s last chance to hype up a reveal of the info.
Sony announced the PlayStation 5 Showcase on September 12, just three days after Microsoft revealed the Xbox Series X’s launch date and price. With its console confirmed for $499 (and $299, for the less powerful Series S version), Microsoft put Sony in the advantageous position of being able to tweak the PS5’s price before announcing it, having won the long price reveal waiting game. Although price announcements had been predicted for prior PS5 events, the reveal seemed most likely for this one, given its proximity to the Xbox news.
Along with price information, rumors and reports suggested the PlayStation 5 Showcase would be the site of much game news, as well. Sony said the 40-minute event would feature updates from its own Worldwide Studios and from third-party partners, and a deleted tweet from Final Fantasy’s brand manager sparked speculation the series’ sixteenth entry could be revealed. Read on to see what viewers actually got, in the end.

Highlights from the showcase include the Final Fantasy 16 reveal, which started off the event with an unexpected trailer. The game looks to be heading back to the series’ medieval fantasy roots for the first time in many years, besides the Final Fantasy 14 MMO. Additionally, Bethesda’s Deathloop impressed with its bizarre, The Incredibles-style, spy and assassin gameplay. The obvious biggest reveal of the entire stream, though, was the announcement of the PlayStation 5’s price and release date (see the linked list item above for details).
