Cats in video games tend to be superfluous bonus features, with the main character usually able to do something like petting or picking them up. While this trope is a fan-favorite, this common equation is essentially turned on its head with Stray, an upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive where the protagonist of the game is an actual cat, wandering a cyberpunk city looking for its family. While info has been scarce recently, the drought ended today with an extensive Stray gameplay trailer.

Produced by indie developer BlueTwelve, Stray’s first footage was revealed in a teaser trailer last June. The first trailer primarily focused on the game’s setting, which looks to be a dreary, neon-lit cyberpunk city, filled with humanistic robots that all appear to have cathode monitor-like heads. This new trailer provides a look at Stray’s gameplay, and focuses on the cat itself.

Posted to the official PlayStation YouTube, the Stray gameplay walkthrough highlights many of the elements players will encounter on their journey through the mysterious city. Narrated by one of BlueTwelve’s producers, the trailer begins by explaining the premise of the game, followed by several segments of platforming action: jumping between platforms, discovering unique pathways to reach certain areas, utilizing objects to get past barriers, and more. The developer speaks on how the unique perspective of a cat makes for creative opportunities in level design, like a laser grid or spiraling rain pipe being impossible for humans, but no problem for the fearless feline.

As revealed by the update on Stray’s official website, the gameplay trailer also focuses on B-12, the cat’s drone companion. B-12 is an essential partner for the cat, able to interact with various objects in the world, translating the language of the human-like machines, and storing various items. A “key element” to the game will be the evolving relationship between the cat and B-12. While video demonstrates how the game will be filled with “cats will be cats”-type interactions like couch-clawing, it also shows one of the game’s big threats. “Zurks,” as they’re called, are vicious swarms of creatures that attack the cat, and are apparently a big factor on the city’s inhabitants.

Stray’s gameplay trailer was one of several featured during today’s Annapurna Interactive July showcase. The video game publisher revealed a variety of trailers for its upcoming titles, like the heavily stylized action game Solar Ash, and music-inspired platformer The Artful Escape, which features an A-list voice cast like Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey and The Mandalorian’s Carl Weathers. However, many fans’ biggest takeaway was that of Stray’s gameplay trailer, which was saved until nearly the end of the showcase.

While the release window for Stray has unfortunately been delayed, the trailer does confirm that the game will be launching at some point “early next year.” Hopefully a more concrete date will be announced in the coming months.

Stray is slated to launch in “early 2022” for PS4 and PS5.
