PlayStation “Fans” Petition To Cancel Hideo Kojima’s Xbox Project

“Fans” of the PlayStation console are attempting to cancel the potential deal between rival console Xbox and game developer Hideo Kojima.

So-called “fans” of the PlayStation console are trying to cancel game developer Hideo Kojima’s rumored partnership with Xbox. The individuals upset with the deal have created a Change.org petition in hopes of stalling and eventually canceling the deal. While their reasons for being upset are understandable, their methods are far from agreeable.

In July 2021, information surfaced that indicated that Kojima, creator of Death Stranding, would be signing a deal with Microsoft. The deal would supposedly give Microsoft exclusive rights to release a cloud-based game developed by Kojima Productions. Not many details are known at the time of this writing; all that is confirmed is that Kojima signed a letter of intent regarding the deal.

Still, even the mere possibility is upsetting some PlayStation owners. According to Push Square, a group of “fans” have created a petition hoping to cancel the Kojima-Xbox deal. They consider the deal to be a “betrayal” and accuse Kojima of being “blinded by greed.” This is ignoring, of course, the numerous occasions Kojima has had titles published for Xbox. He’s also had games on Nintendo systems, as pointed out by Falco X|S on Twitter.

To the children claiming that Hideo Kojima should be a PlayStation star and is a traitor for working for Xbox, let me teach you a little bit of gaming history. At least one reason for the petition is somewhat valid, however. The petition claims that not everyone has a reliable enough WiFi connection to stream cloud-based games. The petition also points out that not everybody has the funds to purchase a new console or computer. Both are understandable critiques. Neither holds up under scrutiny, however. There is no evidence that Kojima teaming up with Xbox for one title will result in him “abandoning” the PlayStation. There is also no indication that whatever title is released to Xbox won’t make its way to other platforms later.

The reactions to the petition have ranged from amused to angry. While the petition has nearly two hundred signatures at the time of this writing, most are by individuals not committed to the cause. The “reasons for signing” are almost entirely insults thrown at the petition’s creators. Still, the fact that they are signing at all could result in the petition being promoted by Change.org.

It’s unlikely anything will come as a result of the petition. While Change.org and similar sites can be used to promote change, random causes like a video game deal are not high on the list. If anything, this petition will likely bring more attention to the potential partnership, possibly encouraging Kojima and Xbox to forge ahead. The only thing that will be “canceled” here is the credibility of a few supposed PlayStation fans.
