Players won’t have to get their older sibling to help them beat hard levels anymore, as a PlayStation patent would have AI will take over for them.

PlayStation Patents AI That Will Play Games For You

A new Sony patent aims to bring AI to the logical extreme and play PlayStation games for human players. This is not the first time Sony patents have hit headlines, as Sony filed a patent for scent haptics in video games that also turned heads (and turned up noses) in March.

While this sounds extremely futuristic, rudimentary AI potentially capable of what Sony describes has been in games for a long time. PUBG famously uses AI soldiers to populate maps, and games have long utilized AI NPCs to help with missions or battle against players. Hello Neighbor used sophisticated AI for its Mr. Peterson character, who learns the player’s patterns and adapts accordingly. The difference in Sony’s patent, however, is that the AI would not be helping the player or hindering them but would be completing taking over.

According to Patent Scope, Sony Interactive Entertainment published a patent this month (thanks SegmentNext) for technology that would create a default play profile for each user, developing AI behavior that mimics their playstyle by observing their gameplay over time. The AI-controlled player could be tagged-in during story games to help beat hard levels or substitute in during multiplayer matches when the player has to step away.

The patent even covers the use of the AI profile during competitive multiplayer games. In theory, it could be a good substitute when players need to go to the bathroom or have to leave a game early, without throwing the teams off balance. Bots are an issue, though, in competitive games, since hackers can alter bots that have improved accuracy and reaction times over normal players. Whether games would want to incorporate this AI-controlled profile during competitive play is still up in the air. As for PlayStation Trophy purists who don’t want players to earn awards they don’t deserve, the patent outlines that the system could track tasks “as being completed by the user with assistance from the AI game controller.”

Originally, Sony’s AI patent was filed in April 2020, but it was just published and is drawing quite the crowd. The patent is entitled “Automated artificial intelligence (AI) control mode for playing specific tasks during gaming applications.” It details a system that would monitor and observe how a player plays across a number of titles and create an AI-controlled profile that reflects the playstyle of the gamer. When the player needs to leave or is having trouble on a specific part, the AI will take over.

It’s unknown whether Sony will even go on to develop the impressive technology described in the patent. Like many tech patents go, it’s possible that Sony will never put out a product or service like the AI-controlled player. Sony is clearly considering the idea, though, and the idea of being able to relinquish full control in a PlayStation game is likely equal parts fascinating and uncomfortable to some.
