Pokémon 10 Generation 1 Tattoos That Are Too Cool

For many, it’s hard to remember a time before Pokémon, and for many others, there never was. The first video games hit shelves in 1996, and, since then, the phenomenon has only exploded, touching every corner of the world in multiple formats, indoctrinating new fans, and keeping the old ones coming back for more with every new generation.

A seemingly permanent staple of international culture, Pokémon devotees have found a myriad of ways to express their admiration for the franchise, including the highly creative and equally permanent option of custom tattoos. By combining their wild imaginations and the skills of talented tattoo artists, Pokémon super fans can make their devotion loud and clear for all to see.

10 Skeleton Succulent Bulbasaur

While Bulbasaur has found itself in all types of creative fan art, this particular iteration is one few would come up with. Entry #001 in the Pokédex, the grass/poison-type’s most notable feature is the pod on its back that blooms more and more with each evolved form it achieves.

In the case of the artwork, Bulbasaur’s typical closed pod is replaced with a succulent, a real-world plant identified by its trademark thick leaves, engorged to retain water in its native arid climate, providing a logical explanation for the bone-dry Bulbasaur skeleton that it rests upon. This awesome piece comes courtesy of tattoo artist Lina Spice from Kulture Shock in Salt Lake City, Utah.

9 Colorful Cubone

It’s hard to look so cool while being so forlorn, but Cubone pulls it off effortlessly, especially in tattoo form. Dubbed the lonely Pokémon, the artwork makes that fact all the more apparent.

With a flower in its hand and a tear in its eye, even those who are unaware of its tragic backstory can deduce that it’s seen some hardships. Coupled with a striking mixture of gorgeous purple, magenta, and blue, the tattoo is as sad as it is dope. Tattoo artist Tiggy, from Briar Rose Tattoo in the UK, is responsible for this perfect portrayal of the solitary Cubone.

8 Clefairy/Gengar Mashup

Pokémon 10 Generation 1 Tattoos That Are Too Cool

There may not be a better representation of yin and yang (at least in the Pokémon world) when it comes to this incredible fusion of Normal/Fairy-type Clefairy and Ghost/Dark-type Gengar. Despite being polar opposites, their similar body types made them ideal to be mashed together in such an imaginative way.

The piece works on multiple levels as well, lending itself to a popular fan theory that Gengar is, in fact, the shadow of Clefairy’s evolved form, Clefable. The tattoo artist for this inventive piece is Aura Jane.

7 Rampaging Snorlax

Pokémon 10 Generation 1 Tattoos That Are Too Cool

There are few better moods than a peacefully sleeping Snorlax, but that’s not the vibe that’s coming from this piece. Introduced to the earliest Pokémon fans as a literal roadblock, trainers had to wake the snoozing Pokémon with the Poké Flute in order to gain access to routes 12 and 16.

However, the tattoo gives a rare glimpse at the opposite end, turning Snorlax into a Godzilla-like monster, raging and terrorizing the town for presumably being woken up too early. Its accurate style and shading approach give it the look of a detailed manga page, with the ink taking on the appearance of deft pencil strokes. The tattoo artist is Sean Mackay from Stormcrow Tattoo.

6 Original Starters Assemble!

In an incredible clash of modern IP, Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Pikachu are fused with key Marvel Avengers members Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor, respectively.

Holding the prestigious honor of being the original starters (Pikachu is the starter for Pokémon Yellow as well Ash’s in the Pokémon anime series), the four Pokémon line up perfectly with the founding members of the MCU’s Avengers, both in prestige and color scheme (in Pikachu’s case it’s the electric powers). Tattoo artist Alice Burke is responsible for this incredible crossover.

5 Dragonball G

Another strong crossover comes courtesy of a powerful Dragonball and Gyarados combination. The evolved form of the universally useless Magikarp, Gyarados, is easily one of the most intimidating Pokemon amongst any generation, rewarding trainers for taking the time to level up their inept fish pokemon.

Although it strongly resembles a dragon, Gyarados is actually a dual water/flying-type. But despite that fact, the artwork takes advantage of the pokemon’s dragon qualities, replacing the legendary wish-granting dragon Shenron and putting Gyarados in charge of the powerful dragon balls (with a poke ball thrown in the mix, of course). Tattoo artist rhodson is responsible for this strong piece.

4 Gameboy Psyduck

Pokémon 10 Generation 1 Tattoos That Are Too Cool

Those with nostalgia for the halcyon days of spending hours mashing away on their Gameboy color will revel in this tattoo. Released in late 1998 in tandem with Pokémon Yellow, the Gameboy color landed right in the middle of a major Pokémon video game wave (Red and Blue debuted in 1996 while the second-generation Gold and Silver debuted in 1999).

Psyduck was surely a familiar sight as the unpredictable psychic-type appeared across all five games and at Misty’s side in the smash-hit anime series. UK tattoo artist Lee Hallam is responsible for this magnificent piece.

3 Charcoal Charizard

As one of the coolest Pokémon to ever exist, it’s hard to go wrong with a Charizard tattoo. The final evolved form of original fire-type starter Charmander, Charizard, is easily one of the most recognizable and beloved Pokémon in the franchise.

Befitting its fiery nature, the tattoo itself resembles a charcoal drawing, devoid of color, with its iconic form filled in with black ink. Tattoo artist Seapazz from eleventhhourtattoo in Liverpool is responsible for this fantastic piece.

2 Pikachu!

Pokémon 10 Generation 1 Tattoos That Are Too Cool

It’s only fair to assume the face of the Pokémon franchise would make for a pretty cool tattoo. Serving as the starter Pokémon for gamers in Pokémon Yellow, main character Ash Ketchum in the long-running anime series (24 years and counting), and most recently in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, the adorable little yellow electric-type has lead the way for the cultural phenomenon at every step.

The artwork itself takes its sketch-like outline and fills it in with a dash of color in the clever shape of a lightning bolt. Tattoo artist Sare executes this clean and adept design to perfection.

1 Rainbow Haunter

The evolved form of Gastly and pre-evolved form of Gengar, Haunter is one of the creepier and scarier members of Generation 1, making for a great artistic subject for fans that want a more intimidating Pokémon-related art piece. But this tattoo manages to turn its form into a far more alluring Pokemon.

Blending blues, greens, reds, and yellows into its signature purple, the piece replaces Haunter’s sinister vibe with a bright, colorful look that is accented by some cartoonish highlights, all while still preserving Haunter’s canonic ghostly form. Tattoo artist Bonita Caruana brings their trademark rainbow style to this work.
