Pokémon BDSP Ekans Walking Animation Is Terrible, According To Players

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl fans are pointing out Ekans’ (and Arbok’s) follow animation, which is hilariously puzzling.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl players are pointing out the confusingly inefficient walking animations for certain Pokémon – particularly Ekans, the Poison-type serpent. This is not the first time players can experience walking alongside their Pokémon in-game (1998’s Pokémon Yellow introduced this mechanic), but it is worth nothing Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl possesses some unique elements due to being the first main Pokémon game developed by a different studio than Game Freak. As a result – while developer ILCA did not stray far from its original source material – Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl has some differences that set it apart from other series installments.

Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl includes enhanced graphics and a new chibi art style – the most glaring departure from its Game-Freak-developed predecessor. That said, a variety of BDSP gameplay and features are changed with the rereleases, as well – Hidden Machines are gone (replaced by Pokétech mechanics), the Underground area is now the comparatively larger Grand Underground, and much more. One huge change, however, is a trainer’s ability to walk around with Pokémon outside of their Poké Balls. This feature is intended to foster closer relationships between Pokémon and their trainers; and in many cases, the toddling Pokémon look adorable as they follow behind the player.

Out-of-Poké-Ball Pokémon have unique follow animations. Rock-type Pokémon Golem curls up into a ball and rolls alongside its trainer, for one; while some Pokémon are capable of walking around faster than others (Bastiodon, for example, is painfully – but accurately – slow). That said, some walking animations don’t make any sense, according to some Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl players. Reddit user UrFriendlySpider-Man recently uploaded a video showcasing Ekans’ follow animation, calling it “hilarious bad.” The video reveals Ekans – which one would expect to slither like its snake-like appearance suggests – impossibly following its trainer while in its standing, coiled-up form. To add further confusion, Ekans slithers in the Pokémon television series, rendering its Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl animation unrealistic.

Other Reddit users commented the names of other Pokémon with bizarre walking animations. One user mentioned Milotic, a similarly serpant-like Pokémon, which they explained “looks like it’s just floating there paralyzed” when following its trainer. Other commentors also discussed Rayquaza, which many described as “comically bad” and “lazy” for having a similarly static-looking walking animation.

Although these walking animations appear to pale in comparison to its series predecessors, there are a lot of elements that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl seem got right. With the chaotic releases of other recent remasters, it is commendable that an entirely new studio could revamp a former Pokémon title while also maintaining its nostalgic appeal. Perhaps future updates will improve the walking animations for certain snake-like Pokémon, as well.
