The way Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl handle Ditto is a refreshing turn for the series. Ditto has always been best Pokémon to place in the Day Care, as it can breed with any other species and thus facilitate producing competitively viable Pokémon as well as completing the Pokédex. However, having a Pokémon that makes the game as easy as Ditto does is not always a good thing.
Fans of the series have complained that recent Pokémon games have been easier than older. Between locked Exp. Shares and long tutorials, the Pokémon series has seen a major shift toward catering to newer players since Gen 6. A consequence of this change is that some veteran players now find the games boring and devoid of all challenges.
However, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s treatment of Ditto offers a welcome return to difficulty. Ditto can only be caught after completing Sinnoh’s National Dex. And without the Pokémon in the Day Care during the regular run-through, several in-game missions and objectives become much harder.
Pokémon IV Breeding & Completing The National Dex Is Hard Without Ditto
One of the major difficulties the absence of Ditto causes is completing Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s National Dex. Certain Pokémon can only be obtained once during a run-through – like Eevee – and sometimes choosing one species means missing out on others – like with the starters. This results in players being unable to complete the National Dex without tons of trading, restarting the game, or owning both Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Ditto simplifies this issue by allowing players to breed Pokémon like Eevee and the starters so they can get all of their evolutions and trade exclusive species with friends. Without Ditto, though, completing the National Dex will become a much more difficult and time-absorbing task.
Additionally, Ditto has made IV breeding a breeze in recent generations of Pokémon. Fans have enjoyed the quality of life changes that came in Pokémon Sun & Moon regarding competitive breeding, as players can now see the exact rating of their Pokémon’s IVs and even how their EVs are developing. Ditto – who already makes the Masuda Pokémon breeding method easier in these Gen 4 games – facilitates this process as well because a 6 IV Ditto can pass on its excellent stats with any Pokémon it breeds with, and a well-bred Pokémon can make any of the Pokémon games easy. It is thus a nice change to see that Ditto can realistically only be used in the post-game, where players can use their competitively bred pocket monsters against truly formidable opponents.
The Pokémon series has had its reasons to make recent generations easier. The games are designed for children first, after all. Nevertheless, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s treatment of Ditto provides a refreshing sense of difficulty for veteran Pokémon trainers.
