Pokémon BDSPs Grand Underground Fixed The Originals Big Problem

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl introduced players to the Sinnoh region’s Grand Underground, an elevated form of Diamond and Pearl’s Underground. Now, players can access special rooms called Hideaways throughout Pokémon BDSP’s Grand Underground, each of which hosts wild Pokémon and is based on a certain type of terrain. Some Hideaways are icy and cold while others are swampy or glowing crystal caves. Perhaps the best Hideaways for trainers, however, are the fiery caverns, which allow players to catch Fire-type Pokémon that were otherwise scarce in the original games.

When Diamond and Pearl were released in 2006, players had only two Fire-type options before acquiring the National Pokédex in the post-game: Chimchar and Ponyta. Therefore, if players didn’t choose Chimchar as their starter, Ponyta was their only option if they wanted to include a Fire-type on their team. The post-game offered the legendary Fire-type Heatran and Fire monsters from past games, but these couldn’t be used during the games’ story. Pokémon Platinum fixed this problem by adding Fire-types like Houndour and Magmar into Sinnoh’s Pokédex, and while the Pokédex is one of Pokémon Platinum’s changes that didn’t make it to BDSP, the latter still contains a workaround.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s Grand Underground fixed the original Diamond and Pearl’s big Fire-type problem by adding Fire-types to its new Hideaways and by allowing players to access them early in the game. The Grand Underground is segmented which means players can only access certain sections from certain areas around the map of Sinnoh. For example, icy Hideaways are relegated to underneath Snowpoint City and northern Sinnoh and cannot be accessed earlier than this. However, fiery Hideaways are accessible fairly early on in the game, and Fire-types are some of Pokémon BDSP’s rare Grand Underground spawns.

Fire-Type Pokémon Are Easier To Find In BDSP’S Grand Underground

Players can explore Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s changed Grand Underground once they reach Eterna City, home of the second gym. Before reaching this town, players would’ve already had access to Chimchar as their starter or Ponyta in the wild, but once they go underground, they can find Fire-type Pokémon such as Houndoom roaming about. Moreover, players can skew spawn rates of certain Pokémon types by placing statues in their Secret Base. All one has to do is dig for statues and, for example, find a Magmortar statue to begin seeing more Fire-type Pokémon appear in the Hideaways. In the post-game, players can access the Fire-type starter Pokémon Charmander, Cyndaquil, Torchic, and Chimchar in Hideaways, too.

Searching for a Fire-type Pokémon in the Grand Underground may take some time, but it will be worth it. Eterna City’s gym leader, Gardenia, specializes in Grass-types, so catching one immediately after receiving the digging equipment would prove fruitful in her gym. Likewise, Maylene’s Lucario as well as Byron and Candice’s gyms would all sweat if players bring a Fire-type with them. Wild Pokémon’s levels in the Grand Underground scale with story progress, too, so players won’t have to grind a ton once they catch a Fire-type. This means they can more easily create their best starting team in Pokémon BDSP.

Ultimately, the inclusion of more Fire-type Pokémon diversity in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is a welcome change and one that would have been a big missed opportunity had the originals’ big problem not been addressed. The Hideaways proved to be a perfect medium between these games maintaining Diamond and Pearl’s original Pokédex listing and keeping the Sinnoh region’s Pokémon diversity rich like Platinum. Now, players not only have a more diverse range of Pokémon for their playthrough, but also a reason to replay the game so they can use even more Pokémon from the Grand Underground’s Hideaways.
