The Elite Four is a group of four Trainers representing the strongest challengers in any given Pokémon region, only bested in skill and raw power by the League Champion. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl, the Sinnoh Elite Four live up to their fearsome reputation.

Players might have some trouble dealing with these four unyielding Trainers, but there’s always a way around them. Indeed, the Elite Four are challenging but not invincible, and there are a few strategies that players can use to make their battles with the Four as short and painless as possible.

Train Pokémon To Appropriate Levels

Many players think they can challenge the Elite Four with their Pokémon in the mid-50s. It’s possible, but not recommended, since the strongest Pokémon in the Elite Four is Lucian’s level 63 Bronzong. Even with the experience earned from the Elite Four’s battles, a Pokémon at level 55 wouldn’t catch up.

The Experience Share will help, and there are plenty of tips to maximize experience in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, so players shouldn’t have much trouble grinding their team to the appropriate levels. Anyone wanting to challenge the Elite Four should go in with their team in the high 50s or even low 60s.

The Elite Four in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl aren’t afraid to use them. The four Trainers will use not only healing but also held items that provide a significant advantage. For instance, Bertha’s Quagsire and Flint’s Lopuny hold Leftovers, and Flint’s Infernape comes with a Focus Sash.

Players should also equip their team. Sitrus Berries are among the most useful items in a Pokémon battle and are easily obtainable and replenishable. The previously mentioned Leftovers can also make all the difference. The three Choice items — Band, Scarf, and Specs — boost Attack, Speed, and Special Attack, making them a Trainer’s best friends.

Strike A Balance

It might be tempting to be a Type Specialist, but sadly, casual players can’t afford that luxury. Anyone looking to have a regular gaming experience should strive for a balanced team capable of handling all eight Gym Leaders in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, plus the Elite Four and the Champion.

Most teams should do well to include a Flying-type, a Dark-type, and a Fairy, if possible, plus their trusty Starter Pokémon. Diversity is key, considering the Elite Four’s varied types. Additionally, players should have one Pokémon, or at least one move, that’s Super Effective against the Elite Four’s respective types.

Have A Stat-Resetting Move

Some players might consider non-damaging moves a waste of space. Indeed, many battles can be won with one Super Effective move, but the Elite Four in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl aren’t like that. All four Trainers have clear strategies to give them an edge in battle, including using many stat-altering moves.

For example, Flint’s obnoxious Drifblim spams Minimize, which increases its evasiveness, making it extremely hard to hit, and Aaron’s Vespiquen knows Attack and Defense Order, increasing its Attack and Special Attack and Defense and Special Defense, respectively. A move like Haze can eliminate any of these stat changes, preventing foes from turning the battle in their favor.

Make Full Use Of The Starter Pokémon

Chimchar might be the best Starter in Generation IV, but Piplup and Turtwig aren’t pushovers by any means. All three Sinnoh Starters are incredible Pokémon, and they can all prove highly effective against the Elite Four.

Infernape can deal with Aaron’s Bugs and half of Lucian’s team. Empoleon will come in handy against Bertha’s Sudowoodo and Whiscash and nearly all of Flint’s team. Lastly, Torterra can deal with Aaron’s strongest Pokémon, Drapion, and Flint’s Fire-types. Players won’t win the match with their Starter alone, but it can be a valuable ally in battle.

Don’t Neglect Flying Abilities

In previous generations, Flying-types were a staple in a playthrough team because of the HM Fly. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl got rid of HMs, but Flying remains vital for any player looking to make things easier. It’s Super Effective against Gardenia and Maylene’s Gyms and will be a life-saver during the Elite Four battle.

Flying-types are immune to Ground, meaning half of Bertha’s team can’t touch them. A strong Flying-type will also easily deal with Flint’s Infernape, Lucian’s Medicham, and, especially, Aaron’s Heracross. Flying-types might not be famous for their strength, but they are life-savers in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Bring Along Some Dark-Types

Regarding convenient types to have in battle, Dark is almost a must. It can make all the difference between a painless win and a brutal loss.

Dark-types will single-handedly deal with Lucian’s entire team, including his annoying Mr. Mime and relentless Bronzong. A fast-enough Dark Pokémon will also take down Flint’s problematic Drifblim before it can Batton Pass to the dangerous Infernape. Dark is one of the strongest Pokémon types, and the Gen IV remakes showcase how incredible they can be in battle.

Don’t Over-Rely On The OHKO

OHKO stands for one-hit knockout, a wonderful tool that can end a battle as quickly as it began. Super Effective STAB moves can indeed result in OHKOs, but players challenging the Elite Four shouldn’t go into battle expecting things to end so easily.

The Elite Four in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have all sorts of tools to prevent OHKOs, from Focus Sashes to berries that reduce damage from Super Effective moves. Players need to strategize beyond the first turn, having a healthy variety of moves and items. OHKOs can still happen, but it’s always better to be overprepared rather than underprepared.
