Pokémon Brilliant Diamond More Popular On Twitch Than Recent Generations

The Pokémon series has long been popular, but from statistics tracking it’s evident that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl have found more success on Twitch than recent generations and remakes. While reviews of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Pokémon Shining Pearl painted them as fun but not very exciting or innovative additions to the franchise, hard numbers show that the newest remakes have garnered quite a bit of attention on Twitch as players await the next new entry in the series, due early next year.

Generation 4 of Pokémon has its adherents, with many calling for remakes of the now 15-year-old games for years now. Now those remakes have arrived, and they ring in the last weeks of the franchise’s 25th anniversary year celebration. The games are no stranger to streaming platforms, either, with many Twitch streamers broadcasting their Nuzlocke runs or shiny hunting. There was the massively popular “Twitch Plays Pokémon” experiment some years back (now memorialized in a documentary), and every time a new Pokémon game comes out viewers flock to streaming platforms to watch their favorite content creators go through the game. Every game is a big deal, but these Gen 4 remakes seem to be making a bigger splash.

After the games’ first week of release, Gamesight has compiled and analyzed the statistics to find that the new remakes have done better on Twitch than most other recent titles. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl received more than 18.4 million hours of content watched in their first week on Twitch, surpassing the newest entries in the series, Sword and Shield, by more than a million views. The remakes also performed better when compared to spinoffs like Pokémon Unite. For games that can be beaten in under an hour, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are certainly captivating audiences more than other games in the franchise have managed to do.

Further looks at the stats show Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl blowing other Pokémon games out of the water. The remakes beat Sword and Shield in every category except for “Top Game on Twitch,” where Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl peaked at number two while Sword and Shield took the top spot. It’s interesting that these new remakes performed much better than 2018’s Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, given that nostalgia for the first generation of Pokémon runs strong. Viewers clearly enjoy new content, but it seems that their longing for the past extends to some of the more recent games as well. It probably helps that Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are home to some memorable content, like the Sinnoh region’s great NPCs.

Only a few months remain until the launch of the next new Pokémon adventure, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. So, Twitch viewers hungry for Pokémon content can look forward to that while they continue to give Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl plenty of love. With so many successful releases in its 25-year-long history, the Pokémon franchise maintains its status as one of the most popular franchises ever created.
