Thanks to a YouTube channel covering Pokémon news and tips, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl players now have a guide for obtaining Mythical Pokémon Shaymin earlier than intended. Mythical Pokémon are not to be confused with Legendary Pokémon, although the two types share a few similarities. Mythical Pokémon are, technically, Legendary Pokémon as well – however, Mythical Pokémon can only be acquired through means existing outside of series games, such as special events or downloadable content. On the other hand, non-Mythical Legendary Pokémon can be obtained through a game’s storyline.

Although Mythical Pokémon are difficult to obtain in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and any other Pokémon installments, some Pokémon that exist within the newly released remakes are similarly difficult to encounter. Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl developers made the highly popular Pokémon Munchlax near-unobtainable. To catch Munchlax (which eventually evolves into the recognizable Snorlax), players must look beyond encounters in the wild. Rather, Honey Trees need to be slathered with the Honey item in order to attract the adorable Pokémon. That said, players then must wait for six hours before checking their traps for the evasive Munchlax – and even then, this tactic only has a 1% chance of emerging successful. At that point, encountering Mythical Pokémon Shaymin is comparatively easier, thanks to a Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl glitch.

Thanks to YouTube channel PokeTips (via Dexerto), players now have a guide for how to obtain Shaymin earlier than intended. Shaymin is supposed to be encountered through the Oak’s Letter event added to the game through its Mystery Gift feature. However, if players have already defeated the Elite Four, defeated the Sinnoh Champion and gotten their hands on the National Pokédex, then they can access a glitch to access a battle with Shaymin.

Just beyond Victory Road on Route 224, players will encounter an NPC trainer named “Black Belt Carl” walking in circles alongside the ocean shore. PokeTips explains that players must position themselves so that they are within Carl’s line of sight, and subsequently “mash” the A-button when Carl notices them (indicated by a floating “!” sign above his head). After the battle – if done correctly – players will be able to surf on land. Afterward, gentle movements toward an elevated area will cause the player to essentially fly and drop into the nearby water. Other steps are required at this moment, but the ultimate goal is to enter Mythical Pokémon Shaymin’s domain, Flower Paradise through these maneuvers.

It is unclear whether this glitch was left in the game on purpose; but based on Nintendo’s affinity for fun glitches in games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s possible developers actually wanted players to bend the game in ways that could benefit them. With this in mind, perhaps there are even more helpful hacks and glitches to uncover in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.
