Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl should be faithful to the originals, but not forget the major changes made to them by Platinum.

While remakes should always be faithful to the originals, it’s important that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl also include later features and make small changes where they are needed. Pokémon Platinum made many significant changes to the original games set in the Sinnoh region, and those changes shouldn’t be dismissed in an effort for these remakes to remain true to Pokémon Diamond & Pearl.
While faithful to the originals, many fans were disappointed to see that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl were not made to match the aesthetic of Pokémon Sword & Shield. This art style choice appears to have been made in an effort to preserve the image of the original games and could be tied to the remakes’ developer, ILCA, Inc. This is the first time that a main series Pokémon title has been outsourced to another developer, raising the concern that a third party developer would simply translate the original Pokémon Diamond & Pearl over without including any changes, which would also explain why the game does not have the same look or feel as Pokémon Sword & Shield.
While remakes should absolutely honor the originals, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl shouldn’t take that concept too far. While Pokémon Diamond & Pearl were important games for the franchise, they were still flawed, and Pokémon Platinum made numerous important changes that enhanced them. The biggest of these changes was the increase in Pokémon variety throughout the game. Pokémon Platinum made significant changes to many of the late-game boss battles, with gym leaders and Elite 4 members featuring much stronger and well-composed teams. The most prominent of these was the fire-type Elite 4 member Flint, whose original team included the only two fire type Pokémon available in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. It’s critical that this isn’t forgotten and that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl include these changes from Pokémon Platinum, and there’s at least some indication that this could be the case.
Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Appear Use Platinum Ideas
Platinum added an extra NPC to Floaroma Town to talk to you about the Gracidea and give it to you if you came with Shaymin. Guess who’s there in the trailer. pic.twitter.com/1iOazHLfQq
Fortunately, the reveal trailer for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl did include an indication that Pokémon Platinum has not been left out. In the overhead shot of Floaroma Town, the NPC related to Shaymin and the Gracidea Flower can be seen. This NPC was added in Pokémon Platinum to accommodate Shaymin’s new Sky Forme, which was not in the original versions of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. While this doesn’t necessarily address the issue of Pokémon variety in the remakes, it’s an encouraging sign that these games may not forget about the improvements Pokémon Platinum made to the original games.
Historically, Pokémon remakes have included changes from all games set within a particular generation, and that is probably going to be the case here as well. But the game’s extreme likeness to the originals, in combination with an outsourced developer, has caused some reasonable concern over the accuracy of these remakes. It’s too early to know for sure, but it’s a fair question to raise after the reveal trailer of the heavil- anticipated remakes. Many of the changes made in Pokémon Platinum are now commonplace within the franchise and will certainly be included, but its variety in available Pokémon is something that absolutely needs to be included in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.
