The Pokemon Company has apologized after using Dewgong to promote Pokemon Sword and Shield in the latest episode of its Twilight Wings miniseries. The company has released one episode of the show each month since the beginning of 2020, all of which have premiered for free on YouTube. Although Twilight Wings is set in the Galar region that debuted in Sword and Shield, it is not part of the mainline Pokemon anime which was recently put on hiatus.

Pokemon Sword and Shield have rapidly become the best-selling Pokemon games in a long time, but many players are not entirely satisfied with them. Sword and Shield do not include the complete National Pokedex, which means they only support the use of certain Pokemon from previous generations, unlike the other mainline entries. This has been a massive topic of contention since before the games even came out, and continues to be one of the biggest complaints about them. However, Game Freak is trying to address the problem to some degree with the addition of over 200 “well-known” Pokemon from the history of the series as part of the upcoming DLC expansions, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.

Nintendo Life has relayed a tweet from The Pokemon Company’s official Japanese account. Roughly translated, the tweet apologizes for the appearance of Dewgong in the fourth episode of Pokemon: Twilight Wings. Dewgong is one of the original 151 Pokemon, but it currently cannot be used in Sword and Shield. Since Twilight Wings was explicitly created to promote the games, The Pokemon Company stated that Dewgong’s inclusion in the show was “misleading.” Check out their official message below:

The episode itself follows the Water-type Gym Leader Nessa, who takes time for self-reflection after losing a battle to another Gym Leader. She takes one of her Pokemon for a ride through the ocean waters surrounding the Galar region, and is followed by a menagerie of other Water-type Pokemon. A few wild Dewgong suddenly appear during this sequence, jumping over Nessa and back into the water. Some viewers interpreted this as a tease for the eventual addition of Dewgong to Sword and Shield, but most others were just offended that an inaccessible first-generation Pokemon was shown off.

If this had happened in any other piece of Pokemon media, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. Still, this could be considered salt in the wound for people who are upset by the missing National Pokedex, especially if they desperately wanted to bring their Dewgong into Pokemon Sword and Shield. The claims of “false advertising” might be a little dramatic, though.
