One dedicated fan remade a couple of locations in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl with Unreal Engine, and the results are quite impressive to see. The 2006 edition of Nintendo’s beloved monster-collecting RPG franchise has been the subject of much discussion and fanfare recently thanks to rumors of a Switch remake in the style of 2019’s Pokémon Sword and Shield coming at some point this year.
The first main Pokémon games to be released on the Nintendo DS, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl sent players to the Sinnoh region and introduced them to now-iconic creatures like Super Smash Bros. mainstay Lucario. Nostalgia for the fondly-remembered installment has been building up thanks to several never-before-seen data leaks last summer, and now one fan has given players just a taste of what the world of Sinnoh would look like in 3D.
Last week, Reddit user u/papabeard88 posted images of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl locations that they recreated in Unreal Engine to the r/Pokémon subreddit. These consist of Twinleaf Town (aka the home of the game’s player character) and multiple angles of the Route 201 road that connects it to Sandgem Town, where the player can purchase their first Poké Balls for the journey ahead. Check out some of u/papabeard88’s renderings below:
These visually stunning images come as The Pokémon Company teases a new Switch remake of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl as part of its plans for the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise throughout 2021. As part of the festivities, Nintendo hosted a New Year’s Day Livestream from the International Space Station earlier this month, and several exciting Pokémon titles and tie-ins are either in the works or already available, such as a remake of the N64 cult favorite Pokémon Snap and special Gucci Avatar items for Pokémon Go.
In the meantime, seeing the starting locations of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl rendered in Unreal Engine is a treat for players hoping for a 3D remaster of the beloved DS installment in the near future. The lush green wilderness and sunny atmosphere of Twinleaf Town and Route 201 are recreated beautifully, serving as an enticing first step in the player’s journey to becoming a Pokémon Master. Fans just might be able to experience that journey all over again if the Nintendo DS remake rumors prove true later this year.
