Pokémon League Champions are said to be the best of the best, and, while that’s not true for some, others undoubtedly live up to the title.

The main purpose of nearly every main series Pokémon game is to beat the gym leaders and Elite Four members and eventually challenge the reigning Champion. Give or take some detours where you fight the regional evil team, this is the basic goal of every new generation.
Considered to be the strongest trainer of the entire region, the Champion battle will most likely be the toughest battle of all. He or she will constantly heal, have rather powerful and even rare Pokémon, and a killer musical theme that adds to the overall experience. While most Champions definitely live up to the hype and deliver a truly spectacular fight, some others fail to make an impression, and one or two are simply forgettable.
10 Diantha
By far the least interesting, least memorable, and easiest to best Champion, Diantha stands as the final challenge in Pokémon X & Y. Her team is surprisingly weak; not only does she have two pokémon with a total of six 2x weaknesses, but one of them, Aurorus, is 4x weak to both Fighting and Steel. While her Hawlucha and Mega Gardevoir are very decent Pokémon, they can’t make up for their four other lackluster teammates.
Unlike other Champions, Diantha hardly has a substantial role in the game. She shows up only a couple of times and never helps the player in any meaningful way. Not only is she a very easy fight, but she’s also not that great of a character either.
9 Wallace
Wallace had the misfortune of having an extremely tough act to follow. After Steven steps down, Wallace becomes the Hoenn region’s Champion, and, suffice it to say, he doesn’t really live up to the challenge. For starters, he runs a Water-type team, which makes the battle considerably easier. While Water only has two weaknesses, one of them is the very common Grass-type.
His team is not as easy to beat as Diantha’s, especially his Earthquake-knowing Gyarados and his ace, the bulky Milotic. In the end, though, Wallace seems more like a Gym Leader than an actual Champion, and he can’t help but feel like a letdown from his predecessor.
8 Alder
One of Unova’s two Champions, Alder is the League’s final challenge in Black & White. Alder has the unique privilege—or misfortune—of being the only Champion that can’t be battled the first time the player challenges the Elite Four. Instead, the player goes against fan-favorite character N, who already fought and defeated Alder.
At one point in the games, big-bad Ghetsis even suggests Alder didn’t actually win the Champion title, but was rather asked by the League to take the position. He runs a diverse-enough team, though he has three Bug-type Ppokémon. Alder is a good Champion overall, but his successor is not only a tougher challenge, she’s also way more memorable.
7 Leon
The most recent addition to the Champion gallery, Leon is Sword & Shield’s resident superstar. He is very much involved in the storyline, and he is even the brother of the main rival character, the too-good-for-this-world Hop. Leon is hyped up for much of the game, and multiple characters talk about just how strong of a trainer he is.
In the end, he does put up a good fight, but he’s nowhere near the level of difficulty of other Champions in the franchise. His team has a good balance—at least if the player didn’t choose Grookey—and his ace, the Gigantamax Charizard, has some surprises under its wings. Still, after so much talk about his talent for battle, he ends up being more bark than bite.
6 Professor Kukui
Although not exactly a Champion, Professor Kukui does act as the final challenge in Sun & Moon. No Pokémon League exists in Alola before the games’ events, and so the player is actually taking part in the first-ever League Challenge. Kukui, the League’s founder, acts as the rival to beat, bestowing the title of Champion to whoever manages to defeat him.
Kukui has a very balanced team that covers between eight and nine different types. He also has the starter that’s strong against the one the player chose, and it’ll be holding a Z-Crystal. Kukui is quite the rival, and his role as the regional Professor makes him all the more memorable.
5 Lance
Originally an Elite Four member in the Generation I games, Lance becomes the Indigo Plateau Champion in Gen II’s Silver & Gold and their remakes. A Dragon Master, Lance was quite the opponent when the games first came out. Considering the Dragon-type was still extremely overpowered, facing Lance was no easy feat.
Four of his pokémon are weak to Ice. However, Blizzard is a wildly chaotic move and Ice Beam wasn’t available in Gen II. That leaves Aurora Beam, Ice Punch, and Icy Wind as the only attacks to exploit the weakness, and none were guaranteed to KO. Lance’s three Dragonites, in particular, represented a challenge for players. While this Dragon Master’s reputation has decreased considerably in recent years, when he first came out, he was a fearsome foe.
4 Iris
Another Dragon Master, Iris is Unova’s second Champion, appearing in the Gen V sequels, Black 2 & White 2. In White, she acts as Gym Leader for Opelucid’s City Gym, before taking on the mantle of Champion.
Despite being considered a Dragon-type trainer, she only has three dragons in her Champion battle. One of them, the terrifying Hydreigon, is extremely tough to beat, but it is her Dragon-Dance-enhanced Haxorus that’s the real challenge. Iris puts on quite the battle, one that’s more exciting and difficult than Alder’s. Her rematch battles are just as tough, proving she really is every bit a Champion.
3 Blue
When players first enter the Champion chamber in Pokémon Red & Blue, they expect to meet the leader of the Indigo Plateau. To their surprise, they instead find Blue, the rival character, who’s revealed as the newest Champion, having just defeated the previous one.
Of all the Champions in the main series games, Blue’s battle carries a significant and unique weight; not only is he the player’s main rival, he’s an actual rival. Unfriendly, unkind, and cocky, he relishes always being ahead of the player and acts as annoying as one might expect. His team is extremely balanced, and he also has the starter strong against the one the player chose. After an exciting and tough battle, the player prevails, but Blue’s place among the greatest Champions in Pokémon remains intact.
2 Steven
In the Generation III games, Ruby & Sapphire, Steven Stone is Hoenn’s Champion. A collector of rare stones and the son of the president of the Devon Corporation, Steven specializes in Steel Pokémon. He wanders the Hoenn region and helps the player on several occasions.
Like other type-specialists, Steven only has three Steel-types in his team. As a matter of fact, he has three Rock-types as well, and two Psychic-types. However, and despite his seemingly unbalanced team, Steven is a juggernaut of a trainer. His Arnaldo is particularly deceitful, but it’s his Metagross that’s the real threat. In ORAS, Metagross can Mega Evolve, adding an extra layer of difficulty to the battle. Steven’s reputation has maintained over the years, and some even consider him the greatest Champion. But, even he is no match for the absolute number one.
1 Cynthia
From the moment the player enters her Chamber, and that iconic piano music starts playing, they know things are about to get real. The Champion of the Gen IV games, Diamond, Pearl & Platinum, Cynthia has been terrifying gamers since 2006. The types in her extremely balanced and diverse team would be enough to make the battle difficult, but her Pokémons make the whole thing even harder.
When the games first came out, her Spiritomb had absolutely no weaknesses. Her Gastrodon was surprisingly tough to beat, her Lucario freakishly strong. But, it was her Garchomp that truly made the battle challenging. There are numerous videos on the internet of her Garchomp Dragon-Rushing pokémon after pokémon, confirming its place among the best Pseudo-Legendaries. Cynthia is, without a doubt, the toughest Pokémon Champion, and she’s not likely to be outranked any time soon.
