Niantic’s fifth birthday will be very soon, and the company is providing a free celebratory gift for the occasion in the form of in-game items for Pokémon GO. This year has been ripe with great success as well as controversy for Pokémon GO, with the game making the most most revenue it’s made since its launch year, but also implementing mechanics that have been deemed controversial, such as recently introduced and overhauled Mega Evolutions.

Many aren’t aware, but Niantic was first formed in 2010 as Niantic Labs under Google parent company Alphabet. In October 2015, though, Niantic broke away from Google to become a separate entity. After dipping their toes into the independent mobile ARG scene with Ingress, Niantic partnered with The Pokémon Company to develop and release the global phenomenon that is Pokémon GO in 2016. The game took inspiration and location data from Niantic’s past ARG venture and has gone on to remain a global success.

For the 5th anniversary of the company, Niantic announced a free giveaway of in-game items to all of the Pokémon GO playerbase. Using the redeemable code “DJTLEKBK2G5EK”, players will obtain 20 Ultra Balls, 1 Star Piece, 10 Pinap Berries, and 10 Niantic stickers that can be attached to gifts. The code will be redeemable until October 13 at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET, which gives about a week before this gift disappears.

The great success Pokémon GO has enjoyed this year is likely in part due to all of the stay-at-home features Niantic implemented in light of the global COVID-19 pandemic this year. However, Niantic has already begun to roll back some of those remote features that were implemented back in March, which has been seen as a divisive move among many players. The pandemic is still very much present across the world – more so now in many places than it was at the time of their addition – so it seems unfair to take away features that have comforted sheltering players for quite some time. Along with this, the debut of Mega Evolutions had a messy reception at launch, to the point where Niantic reworked the feature in response to the criticism.

Despite the controversy Niantic has gotten under fire for, the success of Pokémon GO is still undeniable. At the very least, being able to receive free presents for celebrating Niantic’s foundation is something that’s hard to complain about. It shows that the company does still care enough about the playerbase to get them to stick around. At the end of the day, free stuff is free stuff. The ultra balls will especially help against snagging the rare CPU Pokémon players will find in the wild. Players can redeem the code now to get these items in Pokémon GO via the link provided in the announcement.
