Without its signature attack Geomancy, Xerneas will have a hard time making an impact in Pokémon GO PVP unless its movepool is changed by Niantic.

Pokémon GO Is Xerneas Any Good

Xerneas was introduced in 2013’s Pokémon X and Y and was the first Fairy-type Legendary introduced to the franchise. Since its release, Xerneas has been a staple in competitive Pokémon battling in its various formats. However, in Pokémon GO, the Legendary doesn’t seem to have the same impact on battling as its VGC counterpart.

In the mainline Pokémon games, Xerneas is often built with increased defenses with status moves that boost its stats highlighted by its signature attack, Geomancy. The attack is a two-turn move that charges on the first and increases Xerneas’ Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by one stage on the second. Although Geomancy needs a turn before giving the stat buffs, trainers can use the held item Power Herb to bypass it. These boosts, along with its typing and move pool, make Xerneas a potential sweeper in current and past VGC formats.

Pokémon GO doesn’t have Geomancy as an attack option, so does it hurt Xerneas’ potential in Pokémon GO’s PVP? In short, it does, but it’s not the only reason. Pokémon GO has powerful Fairy types already, and the lack of viable attacks for Xerneas holds it back from being a potential game-changer in trainer battles. Although it likely won’t be called upon in PVP, Xerneas does have some redeeming qualities and uses in the popular mobile game.

Pokémon GO: What Makes Xerneas Good

Pokémon GO Is Xerneas Any Good

Xerneas’ pure Fairy typing makes it a tough Pokémon to defeat because it’s only weak to Poison and Steel-type attacks. In Pokémon GO, Poison isn’t a strong typing because of the lack of strong Pokémon that can take advantage of the same type attack bonus (STAB). Until stronger Poison types like Naganadel are introduced, the best attackers are Pokémon like Gengar who are more likely to utilize attacks that coincide with their primary typing (in this case the Ghost-type). While there are powerful Steel-type attackers like Metagross in the game, there are only a few. The Legendary Pokémon does have considerable bulk in Pokémon GO. Xerneas’ base HP stat is 246, which puts it in the top 20 of all Pokémon currently in the game.

Pokémon GO: What Makes Xerneas Bad

The biggest issue with Xerneas’ viability in Pokémon GO PVP is its movepool. Currently, the only Fast moves it can learn are Tackle and Zen Headbutt. While Zen Headbutt could help Xerneas take on any Poison-type Pokémon, the amount of energy gathered is not worth it. Trainers looking to use Xerneas in PVP battle are better off using Tackle to charge up energy faster to allow for the Pokémon to unleash one of its Charged attacks.

Xerneas has access to a variety of different types of Charged attacks. Moonblast is its only Fairy-type Charged move, but it takes a lot of energy to be able to use. Xerneas would be better off if it had access to Dazzling Gleam, which requires half the energy to use. If Niantic adds a Fairy-type Fast attack to Xerneas’ movepool, and Dazzling Gleam then the Pokémon would be good, but as of now Togekiss and Gardevoir are better options for Pokémon GO PVP since they have both.
