Pokémon Go Players Catch Nearly 1 Billion Pokémon During Go Fest 2020

Pokémon Go Fest 2020 encouraged millions of players to collectively catch nearly 1 billion Pokémon over the weekend, despite its unusual online format. The two-day event gave players a chance to work together even from their own homes, while introducing a handful of new shiny Pokémon to the game.

This year’s Pokémon Go Fest played out a lot different than in years past due to the coronavirus pandemic. Typically an event that brings players together in one physical location, this year was a virtual event instead, where players could participate from anywhere in the world. Despite some concern that the price of admission was too high for an entirely digital Pokémon Go Fest, it at least avoided ending up as a logistical disaster like the notorious 2017 Go Fest, which was plagued with technical issues and filled with disappointed fans.

According to Niantic, Pokémon Go Fest attracted millions of trainers, who caught almost 1 billion Pokémon during the course of the event. Team Rocket also took a beating, with players defeating 58 million members of the infamous crew, all while walking an average of about nine about (or 15 kilometers) each. Since players weren’t able to physically gather in one spot, Niantic added global challenges that let players all over the world contribute to a shared goal to earn rewards.

With Pokémon Go Fest 2020 over, Niantic is turning its attention to what’s next for the popular AR game. As with previous Go Fests, players this year worked to enable Ultra Unlock events, the first of which is going on now. Ultra Unlock events cause certain Pokémon to appear more frequently, increase shiny Pokémon sightings, and otherwise improve the chances of finding new Pokémon. Looking even further ahead, Ninatic has also shared more details on the Mega Evolutions coming to the game, as well as detailing an upcoming increase to the game’s current level cap. Now in its fourth year, Pokémon Go continues to add new content and rework features that are already in the game, most notably by reconfiguring how the game works under social distancing guidelines recently.

Pokémon Go seems like the kind of game that would suffer the most while its players are in lockdown, but Niantic has been working to keep it accessible and even bring new features while the game operates completely differently from normal. The success of 2020’s virtual Pokémon Go Fest might even provide a template for future events that don’t rely on players living in or traveling to specific real-world places.
