Pokémon GO Update Improves Controversial Mega Evolution Mechanics

The next update for Pokémon GO will improve its controversial Mega Evolution mechanics, letting players hold more Mega Energy at once and making Mega Evolutions last longer. The change comes just before the start of Pokémon GO’s October Community Day, which puts Charmander in the spotlight after the ever-popular fire type took second place in a recent Community Day pool – losing only to Porygon.

Pokémon GO’s Mega Evolution mechanic has been controversial since it was added to the game in August. The long-awaited feature was added to mirror the mechanic added in 6th-generation Pokémon games, letting Pokémon evolve into a temporary superpowered form. Though fans were eager to see Mega Evolutions arrive in Pokémon GO, complaints started coming in almost as soon as the feature was added due to the high cost of Mega Evolving a Pokémon and the difficulty of gathering enough Mega Energy to actually start the transformation. Niantic promised that it would fix Mega Evolutions, and has already made some changes to the system, but players still aren’t happy about the feature’s high cost and limited usefulness.

Now, Niantic is announcing another change to Mega Evolutions, improving the feature in two distinct ways. First, Mega Evolutions will now last eight hours instead o the previous four, meaning that players don’t have to rush quite so much to get the benefit of Mega Evolutions before Pokémon revert back to their normal form. The cap on Mega Energy will also be raised from 999 to 2,000, which is a smaller change, but means that players can save up more Mega Energy for when they really need it. Both changes to the Mega Evolution system are effective immediately.

Niantic’s changes to Pokémon GO’s Mega Evolutions will alleviate some problems with the system, but it doesn’t fix them completely. Since it added Mega Evolutions to the game, Niantic has been accused of using the system to funnel players toward microtransactions due to the high cost of Mega Evolving Pokémon. Though the eight-hour window does make Mega Evolutions way more useful, the high Mega Energy cost to actually initiate the change still persists.

Fans seem to have plenty of reasons to be unhappy with Niantic lately, especially since it decided to remove the play-at-home bonuses it added to make the game easier – and safer – to play during the still very much ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This change to Mega Evolutions is likely to make Pokémon GO players less annoyed about the system overall, but it still leaves the basic problems with the system intact.
