Pokémon How To Raise The Friendship Stat

It’s possible to influence the Friendship stat of a Pokémon throughout the series by performing certain actions both in and out of battle. The method for doing so keeps being tweaked with each new generation, but a few ways have stayed the same since Gen 2.

Each player connects to their Pokémon in different ways. Some players have no connection at all, and they just see them as a mixture of types and abilities. There are some players who spend a lot of time crafting their team and they keep bringing them forward to each new game. One of the main rules of Nuzlocke challenges is naming each Pokémon, as it gives the player a closer connection to their Pokémon, rather than just throwing another Pidgey and Rattata out onto the field. Pokémon Yellow introduced Friendship (also known as Happiness by some fans) as a mechanic for the starter Pikachu, but it was fully developed for Pokémon Gold and Silver, with tweaks being added in every generation.

There are a number of different ways to increase a Pokémon’s Friendship stat. The mechanic is necessary for evolving certain kinds of Pokémon and there are various ways in which the player can make the process easier, even if it differs from game to game.

Pokémon Yellow

A prototype version of the Friendship system debuted in Pokémon Yellow, but it only affected the starter Pikachu. This Pikachu has a Friendship stat that can range from 0 to 255, starting at 90 when it’s received in Professor Oak’s lab. The player’s actions can raise or lower Pikachu’s Friendship score. Leveling up the Pikachu or giving it medicine will raise Friendship, walking 255 steps with Pikachu as the lead party member has a 50% chance of raising Friendship, and using a TM/Battle Item on Pikachu can raise its Friendship. If the Pikachu is KO’d in battle, put in the box, or traded away to another player, then its Friendship stat will be lowered.

The Friendship mechanic was properly introduced in Gen II, where it applied to every Pokémon. The Pokémon’s current Friendship affects how much it’s affected by specific actions. The ways to increase a Pokémon’s Friendship include walking with the Pokémon in the active party, taking them to Daisy Oak in Pallet Town from 3-4 pm for a massage, giving them a Vitamin or a battle item (like an X Attack), teaching it a move from a TM, or giving it a haircut from the Haircut Brothers in the Goldenrod Tunnel. The Pokémon gains Friendship from leveling up, but it’s boosted if it levels up in the area where it was first met/caught. It’s possible to lower a Pokémon’s Friendship by having it faint in battle, giving it EnergyPowder, Heal Powder, Energy Root, or a Revival Herb. The Friendship stat always goes up in every game when battling an important trainer. In Gen 2, it refers to Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, Lance and Red. In future games, it’s characters with similar roles who boost Friendship.

The majority of the methods listed in Gen 2 work for Gen 2, including being able to get a massage from Daisy in FireRed and LeafGreen. Pokémon now gain Friendship from eating berries in Pokémon Emerald, but they also lower EVs at the same time. Pokémon now also gain Friendship from using HMs. The Soothe Bell held-item was introduced in this generation and it boosts Friendship gain by 50%. Catching a Pokémon in a Luxury Ball also hastens its Friendship growth.

In Gen 4, the Haircut Brothers return in the Johto remakes, and Daisy Oak can once more be visited in Pallet Town. The Ribbon Syndicate in the Battle Zone in the Sinnoh games can grant a lot of Friendship by offering massages to Pokémon. The player can also get a massage for their Pokémon in Veilstone City. It’s now possible to gain Friendship from winning Contests with a Pokémon.

The methods for raising/lowering Friendship in Gen IV also apply to Gen V. It’s now possible to raise Friendship by using a Wing item on a Pokémon. The player can take their Pokémon for a massage in Castelia City. Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 had a number of different ways to increase the Friendship stat using a mechanic called Join Avenue, but that is now practically unusable, as it heavily relied on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which is no longer in operation. It’s also possible to grant people a Friendship bonus using the Befriending Pass Power, but this requires the aid of other players who own the game connecting wirelessly to the DS.

Pokémon X/Y/Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire

The same methods from Gen V apply to Gen VI, except they no longer gain Friendship from using TMs/HMs. The introduction of Super Training means that Pokémon can increase their Friendship by using the Soothing Bag. In Pokémon X and Y, the player can take their Pokémon for a massage in Cyllage City and by giving them a custom-made smoothie in Lumiose City’s Juice Shoppe. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the player can take their Pokémon for a massage in Mauville City.

Pokémon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon & Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu

The same methods from Gen VI apply to Gen VII. The player can increase a Pokémon’s Friendship by visiting the Food Stalls in the Festival Plaza and giving them a meal. The Pokémon can gain Friendship by having a massage in Konikoni City, and by visit Isle Avue in the Poké Pelago. The Friendship mechanic in the Pokémon: Let’s Go games was simplified a great deal, and players can increase their Pokémon’s Friendship by leveling them up, walking with them on the overworld, and playing with them using the Partner Play mechanic.

Pokémon Sword & Shield

The methods from the earlier games (not counting the Let’s Go titles) apply to Gen VIII, but with one key difference. Pokémon Friendship stats are now capped at a lower value, and the only way to increase them further is by using the Pokémon Camp. The player can increase a Pokémon’s Friendship by feeding them curry and playing with them. The number of toys the player has access to will increase if they keep making different types of curry.
