Pokémon NFT Game Petition Wants Nintendo To Use Pikachu Inu Coin

A Pokémon petition asks Nintendo to use a cryptocurrency called Pikachu Inu in a proposed Pokémon NFT game, and it doesn’t exactly sound like something the notoriously traditional Japanese company will go for. Former Nintendo rival Sega recently faced stiff backlash over NFTs from Sonic the Hedgehog fans, and the environmental impact of NFTs could similarly clash with themes explored in Pokémon games, shows, and movies over the years.

The rise of NFT video games is apparent. Axie Infinity is an NFT monster collecting video game that uses Ethereum-based cryptocurrency AXS and SLP. Currently, it carries the most expensive NFT collection. Illuvium is another monster collecting MMO NFT game built on the Ethereum blockchain and is currently in development. Both titles share many similarities and gameplay mechanics to Pokémon and are based on Ethereum, just like Pikachu Inu Tokens.

Christopher Parker started a Change.org petition for Nintendo to capitalize on this emerging trend by developing a Pokémon NFT video game. Parker wants Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc. to work with the creators of Charizard Inu, Blastoise Inu, Pikachu Inu, and Mewtwo Inu coins on the undetailed game. Based on what little was shared in the petition, it sounds as if the hypothetical Pokémon NFT game would use the crypto tokens as in-game currency rather than the series’ typical Pokémon dollars. Parker claims a large community is backing these coins by buying and collecting them.

The Pokémon game petition was posted about two weeks ago and has 64 signatures, with one commenter having expressed support for the idea. However, there’s no explanation or opinion given about how the Pokémon NFT game would actually work or information given on who created the Pokémon-inspired cryptocurrencies. If the petition hits one hundred signatures, it will be further promoted on the site. Currently, the Pikachu Inu coin is worth $0.000000006624 to 1 US dollar, but some of the cryptocurrencies named in the petition have seen growth over the last several months.

Very few popular game publishers and developers have expressed interest in NFT video games, with some recent exceptions being Sega and EA. Perhaps as public and corporate interest for the trend rises companies may take closer looks at the practice despite its environmental impact. Nintendo has yet to respond to the Pokémon petition, and time will only tell if it will break its current signature goal.
