The creatures of the Pokémon franchise are inspired by a wide variety of real-world references, from Venus flytraps to balloons and aliens to trash bags. However, most Pokémon are inspired by one or more real-life animals. Sometimes these references are very obvious, and sometimes they might be a little more obscure.
There have been a handful of horse-inspired Pokémon throughout the decades-long franchise, and they have made quite the impression. Some are striking in their power and strength, while others are just plain adorable. All of these horse-inspired designs, though, will swell the hearts of horse lovers everywhere.
11 Glastrier
With Pokémon Sword & Shield’s new Crown Tundra DLC, a pair of new equine companions were added to the Pokémon universe, one being this striking ice-type creature covered in a frosty coat and icicles that imitate a helmet and boots. Despite looking more or less like a horse, though, Glastrier isn’t very cuddly.
The spiky icicles and furious eyes that can be glimpsed through Glastrier’s ice helmet give off more of a majestic, powerful energy than a cute one. Even the way that Glastrier stands makes it clear that it is not a creature to be messed with, rather than one to be adored.
10 Spectrier
First seen in the recent Crown Tundra DLC of Sword & Shield, Spectrier is an ethereal take on the equine Pokémon, complete with a wispy mane and a body that floats eerily above its hooves. Majestic as Spectrier is, though, it doesn’t seem like it’d make for a cute companion, generally.
Some may find Spectrier’s gorgeously fluffy mane and frilly eyelashes adorable, but pretty much everything else about this ghostly horse speaks of power. This is a horse that most would call beautiful or, fittingly, haunting, before calling it cute.
9 Rapidash
This fiery unicorn and its pre-evolution Ponyta were the very first horses introduced to the Pokémon universe, and it certainly set a standard for how cool these horses could be. On the cute side, though, trainers’ mileage may vary.
Despite its soft, gentle facial features, Rapidash is one imposing fire-type Pokémon, with its enormous fiery mane and spur-like flames on its feet creating a much more intimidating figure. While this is certainly a horse that it’s easy to picture having a close bond with a trainer, it isn’t the cutest or the most cuddly in the Pokémon universe.
8 Zebstrika
Unlike any other equine-inspired Pokémon, the Blitzle line are inspired by zebras. The second and final step in that evolutionary line, Zebstrika, is a striking electric-type, complete with lightning-inspired markings, antennae-like horns, and hints of yellow and electric blue in its ears and eyes.
However, Zebtstrika is really more intimidating than cute, owing to the angry look of its eyes and its confident stance. While there is a bit of cuteness in the tufts of fur on Zebstrika’s back and tail, as well as the whimsical zebra patterning all over its fur, this zebra is more cool than cute.
7 Mudsdale
This ground-type horse Pokémon doesn’t lose much of the cuteness of its pre-evolution Mudbray, despite its great increase in size during the evolution process. At first glance, Mudsdale is an imposing warrior horse, but a closer look reveals layers of charm to the design which ultimately tilt the scales in the cute direction.
For one, Mudsdale’s braided mane and tufts of boot-like hair around its feet are whimsically shaped, adding a spark of joy to the horse without quite taking away from the intimidating nature of the helmet-like shape atop its mane. Also, its eyes are adorably droopy, subverting the expected angry eyes of many powerful Pokémon.
6 Blitzle
Much like its evolution Zebstrika, Blitzle is a zebra-inspired electric Pokémon with distinctive patterning and tufts of fur that resemble jagged lightning strikes. However, as the younger variant of this zebra-inspired line, Blitzle has an adorable youthfulness to its design, primarily communicated through its small size and wide eyes.
There is a bit of an edge to Blitzle’s design, what with the many jagged lines all over its body, but it’s difficult to argue that this zebra’s smiling face and rounded nose are anything but adorable.
5 Galarian Rapidash
The Galarian forms of the Ponyta line are inspired by a more whimsical and colorful take on the unicorn than the fiery horses typically represent, especially with Rapidash’s imposing design. Even though its eyes betray a powerful spirit, Galarian Rapidash sure is cute.
Its many tufts of cascading teal and lavender hair are beautiful, ending in adorable little curls that add whimsy to this unicorn’s design. Further, Rapidash’s horn, while it may be dangerously sharp, is lovably colorful, reminding one of a more traditional unicorn and, simultaneously, a piece of candy.
4 Ponyta
The original adorable horse Pokémon, Ponyta is a blazing fire-type pony that looks incredibly cuddly, despite the flames that make up its mane and tail. With a minimalist appearance akin to other Gen 1 designs, Ponyta’s simplicity and size combine to create a masterpiece of adorableness.
Interestingly, it’s Ponyta’s enormous eyes that provide the most to its cute factor, with their darkness cut through by only a small gleam. However, Ponyta’s eyes are also very intense and somewhat angrily positioned on its face, adding to the sense of danger that surrounds this fiery horse without sacrificing cuteness.
3 Mudbray
As the pre-evolution of Mudsdale, Mudbray is a fluffy, muddy little horse with a lot of personality in its design that’s enough to make any Pokémon fan want one as a companion. The ground-type pony is perhaps most notable for its unique eyes, which provide much of its charm with their strange oval-shaped pupils.
With Mudbray’s small size, oversized nostrils, and tufts of hair that suggest the shape of the majestic mane and tail that it gets when it evolves into Mudsdale, it checks practically all of the boxes for a cute Pokémon.
2 Keldeo
Legendary Pokémon tend to be either intimidating (like Giratina or Mewtwo) or charming (like Celebi or Mew), and the water-and-fighting-type horse Keldeo falls firmly into the latter category. In both its ordinary and charming forms, Keldeo is a must-have Pokémon for horse lovers and trainers looking for creatures who hide power behind deceptive cuteness.
With a whimsical design full of colors and swirling tufts of hair throughout Keldeo’s mane and tail, this is one lovable pony. What ties it all together are his striking eyes, which combine a fighting intensity with an adorable charm, perfect for the little warrior.
1 Galarian Ponyta
The Galarian form of Ponyta is a psychic-type cotton candy unicorn with even sweeter eyes than the original Kanto variant. It’s basically the epitome of Pokémon cuteness condensed into one little horse. The lavender-and-teal tufts of cascading fluff, the tiny striped horn, and the genuinely hopeful and innocent eyes are what ranks Galarian Ponyta among the cutest Pokémon ever.
With the more intense elements of Kanto’s Ponyta dulled down a bit, Galarian Ponyta doesn’t look as capable in combat, but the cuteness hides genuine power. Luckily, being this endearing, there’s no reason trainers wouldn’t want to befriend a Galarian Ponyta and cuddle into its wispy, bountiful fur.
