Pokémon Sword & Shield 10 Tips For Taking On Oleana

In Pokémon Sword & Shield, Oleana is the Vice-President of the company Macro Cosmos and the assistant to Chairman Rose. Though she typically presents herself as a stoic and diligent worker, she is also very protective and loyal to Chairman Rose to the point that she will battle anyone who tries to get to him. This is the case when the player attempts to interrupt a meeting between Chairman Rose and Leon at Rose Tower.

Unlike most other Macro Cosmos employees, Oleana has more than just steel-type Pokémon. Her roster consists of five Pokémon, each with various typings and strengths. While Oleana is not the most difficult trainer battle in the game, it may be worth checking out some tips to ensure an easy win.

10 Know Her Team

Oleana’s team has fully-evolved Pokemon, with every single one being either level 50 or above. Her team consists of the ice/ghost-type Froslass at level 50, the grass-type Tsareena at level 50, the poison/fire-type Salazzle also at level 50, a water-type Milotic at level 51, and a poison-type Garbador at level 52.

9 Train Up

Oleana’s Pokemon are all at pretty high levels. While the player may be at a similar level to her, it would be ideal for the player to train up their Pokémon to at least level 50. While some of the Pokémon on her team will still be higher level, it should be enough as long as the player has a full roster of Pokémon.

If the player really wants to ensure a win, they can train up their Pokémon to level 55 to make things easier. Training up may feel tedious, but any trainers that the player skipped over will give more Exp than a wild Pokémon would. If players are unable to do that, then they can go back to Route 10 where there will some strong Pokémon to train up with.

8 Have A Diverse Team

Because Oleana’s team consists of several different types of Pokémon, it will be tough for one particular Pokémon to completely sweep her team. Instead, the best option is to compose a team of different typings to cover any weaknesses and ensure that all attacks super effective.

7 Switch Out Pokémon If Need Be

The best way to fight against a team with diverse Pokémon is for the player to strategically switch out their Pokémon. If a player knows their Pokémon is going to be weak or have ineffective attacks against their opponent’s Pokémon, the best option is to put in a different Pokémon with a typing that will be much better suited for the match up. Using this strategy effectively keeps the player in control of the fight and may even prevent the player from losing any of their Pokémon.

6 Use A Ground-Type

Since Oleana has two poison-types (Salazzle and Garbador), the best counter against them would be a ground type. Ground-types are both resistant and super effective against poison-type Pokémon. In fact, since Salazzle is also a fire-type, she is extremely vulnerable to ground-type attacks. Though any ground-type should do the job, some of the best to use against Salazzle and Garbador are Tyranitar, Sandaconda, and Flygon.

5 Use A Steel-Type

Though not as helpful as a ground type would be, a steel-type could be effective against her team. In particular, a steel type would be useful against her Garbador and Froslass as steel is immune to poison-type attacks and is super effective against ice-types. Some good steel-types to use are Klinklang, Copperajah, or Duraludon. One thing to be wary of is that while a steel-type would be immune to Salazzle’s poison abilities, it will be weak against its fire attacks.

4 Use A Fire-Type

Since Froslass is part ice-type and Tsareena is a grass-type, an effective typing to use against both of them is a fire-type. If the player chose Scorbunny as their starter, they should have a Cinderace at this point in the game. A Pokémon like Cinderace should be enough, but if the player does not have one there are plenty of other fire types that would also be good such as Coalossal, Chandelure, and Centiskorch.

3 Use an Electric-Type

To take care of the Milotic, the best type of Pokémon to use would be to use an electric-type as it is super effective against water-types. Toxtricity would be a great Pokémon to use, and the player should have picked up its previous form, Toxel, from the Pokémon Nursery on Route 5.

However, some other options that would be good are Boltund, Raichu, or Jolteon. In terms of fighting the Milotic only, a grass type can be used as well. However, be careful as Oleana’s Froslass, Salazzle, and Garbador will be super effective against it.

2 Use Dynamax or Gigantamax Form

Oleana will eventually Gigantamax her Garbador, which will make it much stronger and tankier. This is an obstacle, but one that can be handled as long as the player also uses Dynamax or Gigantamax. The best types of Pokemon to Dynamax or Gigantamax are either ground-types which are super effective against Gigantamax Garbador or a steel-type since they are immune to poison-type attacks.

1 Use Items

If something goes wrong, such as an important Pokémon on the player’s team fainting, being afflicted with a status effect, or being too weak to fight, it would be important to use items which will heal their Pokémon. The player has likely picked up some items such as Potions, Full Restores, and Revives, but if they find they are missing some of these items, they can buy all of them at the store within the Pokémon Center. Potions will restore some or all of the HP of a Pokémon, Full Restores will bring a Pokémon to full health and cure any status effects, and revives will bring a Pokémon back from fainting.
