Pokémon’s beloved mascot, Pikachu, is finally being featured in a shiny raid event in Pokémon Sword & Shield. For a limited time, players will have a higher chance to encounter the members of Pikachu’s evolutionary line in raids, as well as a higher chance to encounter a shiny version of Pikachu in Max Raids. Pokémon GO players also got the chance to catch some new shinies recently, when a batch of them were added during Pokémon GO Fest 2020.

Shiny Pokémon are among the rarest of Pokémon, as players normally have a .02 percent chance of encountering one in the wild. Shinies aren’t any more powerful than a normal version of that Pokémon; a shiny Pokémon is simply a rare color variant. Every species of Pokémon has a shiny form, and they’re all hard to get. There are some methods of hunting for them and specific items that can increase a player’s chances of encountering a shiny, but even under ideal conditions, the chances of catching one are slim.

However, during the shiny Pikachu raid event in Pokémon Sword & Shield, players have an eight percent chance of encountering the shiny version of the featured Pokémon when battling in 5-Star Raids, according to Comicbook.com. The shiny Pikachu raid event will last from August 6th until August 9th, during which The Pokémon Company says players will encounter Pikachu, Raichu, Alolan Raichu, and Pichu more frequently in raids.

It has been less than a month since the last shiny Pokémon event took place in Pokémon Sword & Shield, which featured shiny Wailord. The Wailord event reportedly had a two percent shiny encounter rate, which was already a ridiculous increase in odds compared to normal. Now, shiny Pikachu has an eight percent chance of appearing in raids, making it even easier to obtain. These events are the best way for players to catch shiny Pokémon for those who don’t want to sit through thousands of encounters. Adding monthly event like this would mirror those of Pokémon Community Days in Pokémon GO.

These events are also great ways for The Pokémon Company to extend the lifespan of its games. Pokémon GO’s monthly events draw hundreds of thousands of players, and the recent GO Fest was an undeniable success in terms of how much money it made and how many Pokémon were caught. Pokémon Sword & Shield events could possibly draw even more of a crowd, as players are not required to leave their houses to get the most out of the event.
