Pokémon Sword & Shields Zarude Everything You Need To Know

The first Mythical Pokémon of the Pokémon Sword & Shield is the mighty Zarude, which is the star of the latest Pokémon movie. Zarude will likely be the only new Mythical Pokémon in the Galar region, which is a shame, considering how Game Freak has finally stopped new Pokémon designs from leaking out.

Zarude was first revealed during the 2020 Pokémon Day celebrations, exactly one year after Sword & Shield were first announced. Zarude is a Mythical Pokémon, which refers to the fact that it cannot be acquired in-game through normal means. The term Mythical Pokémon dates back to the days of Mew in Pokémon Red & Blue, and how fans had to travel to real-life events to acquire one. In the case of Zarude, players need to receive a code from a participating retailer in order to acquire one. This was partly the result of a last-minute change caused by COVID, as it used to be possible to acquire Mythical and Legendary Pokémon by visiting stores and using codes printed on receipts.

It’s possible to acquire Zarude in Sword & Shield, but it still has an additional form that cannot be acquired outside of Japan. For anyone who wants to take a giant magic monkey with them on a trip through the Galar region, here’s everything they should know about the powers of Zaurde in Sword & Shield.

Pokémon Sword & Shield: Zarude’s Powers

Pokémon Sword & Shields Zarude Everything You Need To Know

Zarude is a Dark/Grass-type Pokémon from Sword & Shield. It possesses the Leaf Guard Ability, which protects it from harmful status effects when harsh sunlight is affecting the field. Despite being part Dark-type, Zarude only learns one Dark-type move naturally, and that’s Bite at level 42. It can learn lots of Dark-type moves through TMs, including Darkest Lariat, Throat Chop, Dark Pulse, and Crunch, so it can still utilize its STAB in battle.

Zarude learns tons of Grass-type moves, and it has access to the exclusive Jungle Healing attack at level 90. Jungle Healing heals 25% of Zarude’s health, as well as the health of any allied Pokémon on the field as part of a Double Battle. Jungle Healing also heals any harmful status effects. Zarude has incredibly high stats (as is befitting a Mythical Pokémon), but that doesn’t mean players should take it lightly, as it has a x4 weakness to Bug-type moves, and is weak to Fighting, Flying, Poison, Fire, Ice, and Fairy-type moves. On the plus side, its Dark-typing makes it immune to Psychic-type attacks, and it resists Ground, Ghost, Water, Grass, Electric, and Dark-type attacks. Zarude is banned in VGC battles, so its mighty power is reserved for friendly battles and unofficial tournaments.

Zarude’s Alternate Form & Movie Connection

Zarude has an alternate form, which is referred to as Dada Zarude in Japan. This version appears to be identical in terms of combat abilities and stats, but it has a different sprite. Dada Zarude is seen wearing a pink cape. This refers to the Zarude that is appearing in Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, which raises a human child as its own. Secrets of the Jungle is due to be localized into English this year, but it’s unlikely to receive a theatrical run. It will most likely appear on Netflix, as part of the growing relationship between the streaming service and The Pokémon Company.

As of the time of writing, Dada Zarude is only available in Japan, as codes were given to people who saw Secrets of the Jungle in theaters. The ongoing pandemic means that there is little chance a similar event will happen in places like the United States or the UK. It’s likely that another distribution event will happen when the movie hits streaming services later this year, and fans will be able to acquire a Dada Zarude for Pokémon Sword & Shield via a retailer code.
