Pokémon TCG Chilling Reigns Articuno Moltres & Zapdos V Explained

The Pokémon Trading Card Game’s newest expansion, Chilling Reign, has released 190 new Pokémon cards to collect. This expansion includes several V and VMax cards, as well as various Single Strike and Rapid Strike cards. One of the most appealing additions to the Pokémon card game, however, is the addition of the newly redesigned legendary bird trio. Originally hailing from Generation One, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres were some of the most desirable Pokémon in Kanto. They were recently reintroduced into Galar in different forms.

Pokémon Sword and Shield released its Expansion Pass DLC Crown Tundra, which saw the revamped design of Kanto’s legendary bird trio. Galar’s version of Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos changed key aspects of their identities, including typing. Their introduction into the Pokémon Trading Card Game sees the Galarian trio bring new levels of power into the Chilling Reign card expansion.

The first of the trio offered in Chilling Reign is Galarian Articuno V. Matching the type change found in Pokémon Sword and Shield: Crown Tundra, Galarian Articuno V is a Psychic-type Pokémon. Its moves serve to heavily damage opponents and inflict status effects to further weaken them. Galarian Articuno V comes with the Psyray attack, which deals 110 damage to enemy Active Pokémon and leaves them Confused. This move costs one Psychic Energy card and two Colorless Energy cards to cast. Galarian Articuno V also comes with the Reconstitute Ability, which allows its Trainer to draw a card once each turn after discarding two from their hand. With 210 hit points, this Pokémon is nothing to scoff at when it enters play.

Pokemon TCG’s Chilling Reign Trio Hold Astounding Power

The second of the legendary bird trio introduced in Chilling Reign is Galarian Zapdos V. Like its Galarian counterpart, Zapdos is a Fighting-type Pokémon, but still retains some of the thunderous beauty that its Kanto form had. Similar to Galarian Articuno V, Galarian Zapdos V comes with a single devastating attack and a single ability. Utilizing its talons for a ravaging offensive, Galarian Zapdos V can inflict 170 damage to enemy Active Pokémon. This attack also enables players to discard a Special Energy from an opponent’s Active Pokémon. While Thunderous Kick is a bit expensive to execute, requiring one Fighting Energy and three Colorless Energy, Galarian Zapdos V’s ability helps lighten the load. With the Fighting Instinct Ability, Galarian Zapdos V decreases the cost of Thunderous Kick by one Colorless Energy for each opposing Pokémon in play. This makes Zapdos perfect for evening the playing field – literally.

The final member of the trio is Galarian Moltres V, renowned for its flaming wings and intimidating demeanor. Galarian Moltres V is a Dark-type, despite the inferno design which paints its wings a lovely shade of pink. This legendary bird is centered around getting into combat swiftly and dealing massive damage. With its Aura Burn attack dealing the most damage out of the entire legendary trio, Galarian Moltres V can deal 190 damage on any opposing Pokémon. Unfortunately, Aura Burn also inflicts 30 damage to Moltres itself. Aura Burn costs two Darkness Energy and a single Colorless Energy to cast. While the Darkness Energy may seem difficult to muster, Galarian Moltres V’s Direflame Wings allows its trainer to attach a single Darkness Energy from the discard pile each turn. For Trainers looking to balance risk and reward, Galarian Moltres V is the perfect addition to Darkness decks.
