Psychic-type pokémon can be absolutely devastating, and here are 10 of the most powerful cards ever introduced to the Pokémon TCG.

In the universe of Pokémon Trading Card Game, part of the Pokémon franchise, few can boast of the astounding abilities that Psychic pokémon are known to have. This type is commonly associated with the ones that belong to the elite echelons of the Pokémon world, as many legendary pokémon are usually found to have Psychic traits. These pokémon are great in a team and provide helpful assistance to either themselves or the other pokémon in the team.
However, not all pokémon belonging to this type are capable of showcasing astounding abilities or the full extent of their power, with many powerful dark-type pokémon the catagory also faces a legitimate weakness. Regardless, the type should not be underestimated, as it is home to many intimidating pokémon which make great additions to a PTCG deck.
10 Crobat G
Crobat G is a Psychic-type Basic pokémon from the Platinum expansion with 80 HP. It is also an SP pokémon, which means it was made for the Sinnoh League Games and has special trainers that could be used alongside this card such as Poké Turn and Power Spray. Using these cards, Crobat G can set up damage, deny opponents from setting up damage, and even achieve absurd knockouts, devastating the opponent.
It also has the Poké-Power Flash Bite which allows the player to put 1 damage counter on the opponent’s pokémon every time Crobat G is switched to the bench. The second ability, Toxic Fang, poisons the defending pokémon while putting 2 damage counters on it in between turns. It also features a free retreat.
9 Mew EX
Belonging to the Dragons Exalted expansion Mew EX sports 120 HP and is a Basic Psychic-type pokémon. With abilities Versatile and Replace, this Psychic-type pokémon is one of the most powerful in the PTCG.
Versatile is its most powerful attack, which allows the player to use any pokémon attacks from another pokémon in play either belonging to the player or the opponent. Each attack would, however, require their necessary energy cost. Replace, on the other hand, allows the player to detach as many energy cards as he/she wishes to his/her other pokémon in any manner he/she desires.
8 Trevenant
Trevenant belongs to the XY expansion and is a stage 1 pokémon with 110 HP. Trevenant has two very useful abilities by the names of Forest Curse and Tree Slam. While Forest Curse prohibits the opponent from playing any Item Cards as long as Trevenant is the player’s active pokémon, Tree Slam deals a damage of 60 while additionally dealing 20 damage to two benched pokémon of the opponent.
With supporters like Molly and Dimension Valley, this card becomes immensely useful. Its BREAK form, Trevenant BREAK, is also an exceptional card, which deserves all the praise it can get.
7 Gengar
Gengar is a 110 HP stage 2 pokémon belonging to the Psychic-type and hails from the Storm Front expansion of PTCG. The entirety of this card is brilliant, with abilities such as Fainting Spell, Shadow Room, and Poltergeist being killer moves to use in a game. The first ability, Fainting Spell, allows players to turn the tables by knocking out the opponent’s pokémon if Gengar gets knocked out, by a simple toss of a coin, thereby allowing the player a 50-50 chance of achieving this feat.
Shadow Room, on the other hand, deals damage of 30 on the opponent’s pokémon, and, if the defending pokémon happens to have a Poké-Power, the damage immediately increases to 60. Poltergeist is the most insane, allowing players to view the opponent’s hand, and based on the number of Trainer, Stadium, and Supporter cards they have, this attack deals damage of 30 times the number of those cards in the opponent’s hand, making way for absurd knockouts.
6 Garbodor
Belonging to the Guardians Rising expansion, Garbodor is a stage 1 pokémon with 120 HP. Its first attack, Trashalanch,e is uniquely useful, allowing players to deal damage of 20 multiplied by the number of Item Cards that the opponent has in his/her hand.
The second attack Acid Spray, apart from dealing damage of 70, also disrupts the play and prevents opponents from setting up powerful attacks by discarding an Energy Card from his/her active pokémon.
5 Uxie
Uxie is a Basic pokemon with 70 HP that belongs to the Legends Awakened expansion and has the useful Poké-power of Set-Up. Set-Up is a brilliant move that allows players to refresh their hands and increase their chances of getting the cards that they need. The move functions when Uxie is shifted to the bench, allowing the player to draw cards such that they have seven cards in their hand.
The other ability, Psychic Restore, is also great, allowing players to deal 20 damage, while also replacing Uxie and all cards attached to it to the bottom of the player’s deck. This card’s utility lies in the fact that it allows players to draw through their entire decks and use all the cards in the best possible manner.
4 Slowking
Slowking is a Basic pokémon with 80 HP that belongs to the Neo Genesis expansion. While it does have an ability called Mind Blast, the most relevant ability of this card is its Poké-power Mind Games. Upon putting Mind Games into effect, the opponent needs to flip a coin every time he/she plays a Trainer Card, and, if it lands on heads, the Trainer has no effect and needs to be replaced at the top of the opponent’s deck.
However, what makes this move so powerful is an interesting fact, whereby Wizards of The Coast, the proprietors of Pokémon cards in America, did not issue an errata concerning a mistranslation with regards to this power. While this power was originally supposed to be used only when Slowking is the active pokémon slot, owing to the mistranslation, multiple Slowking’s saw an introduction into the play reducing the opponent’s chances of using a Trainer Card monumentally. Strangely enough, this card was never banned.
3 Tapu Lele GX
Tapu Lele GX is an ultra-rare Basic Psychic pokemon with 170 HP, with the abilities, Wonder Tag, and attack Energy Drive. It also has a GX ability that costs only 1 Psychic-energy known as Tapu Cure GX. The first ability is extremely useful for finding necessary supporters as it allows the player to search the deck for a supporter and put it into his/her hand whenever Tapu Lele GX is shifted to the bench.
The attack Energy Drive allows the player to deal damage of 20 multiplied by the number of energy cards attached with both his/her active pokémon, while the GX ability, which can only be used once during a game, allows the player to heal all damage from two of his/her benched pokémon. The card provides players with incredible consistency and therefore, ranks as one of the most powerful.
2 Gardevoir
Gardevoir is a stage 2 Psychic pokémon with 110 HP and the exciting Poké-Power Telepass. While this power can only be used once per turn, it allows the player to search the discard pile of the opponent and select a Supporter Card and use that Supporter Card’s ability as their own. The card, however, remains in the opponent’s discard pile but allows the player to essentially play two Supporter Cards during a single turn.
It also has the attack Psychic Lock, which, at the cost of 1DCE and 1PE, deals 60 damage and locks the opponent from using any Poké-power of their pokémon during their next turn. The card has also been part of the World Championships winning deck in 2008 used by Jason Klaczynski.
1 Metwo EX
Arguably the most powerful Psychic-type card in existence, this Basic 170 HP pokémon has the outstanding ability called X-Ball, which can prove to be devastating in advanced stages of the game when the opponent and the player are both setting up for big moves.
Being able to deal damage of 20 multiplied by the number of Energy Cards attached to this pokémon, as well as the defending other pokémon, Mewtwo EX is capable of unleashing absolute hell on opponents, all for the cost of 1DCE. It also has the ability Psydrive, but that is not the most relevant ability of this card, as X-Ball triumphs all.
