Hot on the heels of the addition of new character Dragonite, Pokémon Unite has released notes for its latest patch – which adds buffs and nerfs, and improves matchmaking. Since its release in July, the MMO has rolled out frequent updates to maintain balance, including knocking down some of Sylveon’s overpowered Pokémon Unite moves. This latest patch should hopefully smooth the game out even more.
Like every other MOBA out there, Pokémon Unite is constantly undergoing maintenance and tweaks to keep every character competitive and balanced. Overpowered characters – even if it’s just gamer perception and not based on fact – can turn gamers off from a game quickly, so the Pokémon Unite team is prompt in responding to player feedback and implementing change. While this does little to address lingering frustration about the prices of certain microtransactions (something gamers have been particularly vocal about), it does at least keep the player base coming back to the game day after day. Not every patch is perfect; a couple months back Lucario and Crustle Pokémon Unite bugs had to be fixed after the two characters were accidentally buffed. That said, the developers largely keep in-game mechanics even.
A report from The Game Haus, with additional information from Pokémon Unite on Twitter, breaks down the newest patch notes, explaining both the ups and downs that come with it. A few Pokémon, such as Gardevoir, Wigglytuff and Venusaur were nerfed in the form of damage reduction or cooldown increases. Others, such as Eldegoss and Crustle, have been buffed, doing more damage or with longer-lasting effects on enemies. Slowbro received a some tweaks to its Oblivious ability, and also got some buffs while the team was at it. Interestingly, there’s no mention of a fix for Pokémon Unite’s game-breaking Cramorant bug, so that one may still be on its way.
The official Pokémon Unite Twitter account added further information about matchmaking, saying that this patch contains changes to Quick, Standard, and Ranked matches to ensure gamers are matched up with others whose skill levels are equal. As is always the case with such announcements, the Tweet was immediately inundated with replies full of gamers arguing that they see no change or requesting new features or characters be added to the game. This is the sort of change that will take time to see its effectiveness. Hopefully, this will make sure veteran gamers aren’t crushing newbies and everyone is battling others against whom they’re well-matched. And fingers crossed that it doesn’t introduce any new glitches like the unfortunate Pokémon Unite Blastoise Unite Move incident.
As it polishes off six months since release, Pokémon Unite continues to develop and change. The new holiday event, which began on December 15 and runs for four weeks, adds Dragonite, a new map, a new game mode, and more to keep gamers coming back. This newest patch may not make everyone happy, but it should help keep the playing field relatively even.
