In a striking twist of irony in usernames, the world’s fifth-best Pokémon Unite player is named Digimon. As children of the 90s will remember, both the Pokémon and Digimon franchises began at roughly the same time and deal with training colorful monsters to do battle among a few other noted similarities – but the two series are very different beyond that, as the latter IP’s small yet devoted fanbase will attest.

Nintendo and TiMi Studio Group launched Pokémon Unite on the Nintendo Switch a few days ago, with an Android release planned for September. So far, the free-to-play battle arena title has drawn a mixed reception from fans of Nintendo’s long-running monster-collecting mega-franchise, with the top complaints being some potentially predatory monetization practices and some limited gameplay options at launch. Pokémon Unite has still managed to build up a decent player base despite this, and one of the top-ranking members has a stunningly ironic name.

Earlier today, PixelJunkie News’ PushDustIn pointed out that the fifth-ranked player in Pokémon Unite has the handle of “Digimon,” drawing laughs from some users in the Twitter comment section. According to some of these commentators, Digimon was actually in first place for a while, though they have since dropped down in the rankings. Still, it’s funny that a high-ranking Pokémon player bears the name of one of the franchise’s most noteworthy competitors.

Speaking of that competition, while the Digimon franchise has spawned quite a few video games throughout the past couple of decades, none have been able to match the breakout success of Pokémon. The most recent of these games, the dark survival-strategy RPG Digimon Survive, was delayed from its planned 2020 release to allow for more fine-tuning, despite having been considerably far in its development cycle at the time. In the meantime, the Digimon franchise continues to have a media presence thanks to the ongoing Digimon Adventure anime, a reboot of the original 1999 series that began its run last spring.

The battle between Pokémon and Digimon is all but a faded memory at this point, but that doesn’t stop Pokémon Unite’s Digimon player from being hilariously ironic – especially given their high place in the rankings of the still-young multiplayer arena title. It’s clear that whoever is behind the Digimon account has a sense of humor and a taste for 90s-era monster-wrangling franchises, as their choice in Pokémon Unite handles is too funny and on-point to not have been done on purpose.
