Pokémon Why Victini Has 000 As Its Pokédex Number

One of the four Mythical Pokémon in the Unova region holds a strange distinction, as it’s the only Pokémon that has ever been designated #000 in a Pokédex. There is a reason why Victini from Pokémon Black and White holds this special honor, but it involves an event that many players likely missed.

The average Pokémon fan will consider all creatures like Mew, Mewtwo, Celebi, Deoxys, and Genesect to be Legendary Pokémon, but there are actually two classifications of Legendaries. The regular Legendary Pokémon are ones that can be encountered in-game, like the epic encounter with Mewtwo in Pokémon Red and Blue. The other type is Mythical Pokémon, which can only be acquired through outside means. Mew was the original Mythical Pokémon, as it could only be acquired in Pokémon Red and Blue by traveling to special real-life events. In the modern era, Mythical Pokémon are generally given away as part of online events, with a few exceptions, like Dada Zarude being restricted to movie ticket receipts in Japan.

Pokémon Black and White had four Mythical Pokémon: Victini, Genesect, Keldeo, and Meloetta. Victini is a Psychic/Fire-type Pokémon with elements of the letter V woven into its design. The reveal of Victini instantly led to speculation that it was inspired by the nuclear bomb, especially when it became obvious that the Unova region was based on New York City. The fact that Victini had #000 as its Pokédex number also seemed to feed into the nuclear them, with many connecting it to the popular Pokémon War fan theory. The truth behind the Pokédex number can actually be found in Pokémon Black and White, but it’s linked to a specific in-game event.

Pokémon’s Victini: The Promise Of Victory

Victini has been given away as part of different events over the years, but these involved directly receiving the Pokémon via a trade. In Pokémon Black and White, the people who purchased the game within a month of release and connected their Nintendo DS to the Internet would receive an item called the Liberty Pass. The Liberty Pass was used to travel to an island called Liberty Garden, where the player could battle members of Team Plasma and catch a Victini for themselves. The player will then encounter Professor Juniper, who will explain the history of Victini. According to Bulbapedia, Professor Juniper says that the reason why Victini is listed at #000 in the Pokédex was due to the hope that it would impart luck on the trainer who was able to capture it and take it on a journey. Victini was originally locked up in a lighthouse, but it now had the chance to see the Pokémon world as the partner of the player.

It bears mentioning that Victini is only listed at #000 in the Unova Pokédex. Victini is listed at #494 in the National Pokédex, which means that Bulbasaur is still the first Pokémon on the list. Like many Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, Victini’s significance was restricted to its own region, and it’s not quite as special on the Pokémon world stage.
