Porsche Is Getting Serious About EBikes And Theyre Not Cheap

Porsche’s recent deal could be a sign that the arrival of some of the most cutting-edge electric bikes on the market is right around the corner. However, they’re likely going to cost almost as much as a Ducati sport motorcycle. Porsche might have hit a snag with its electric vehicles, but that’s certainly not stopping its push for EV market dominance.

The legendary automaker is no stranger to e-bikes, even coming up with its new lineup in collaboration with German e-bike manufacturer Rotwild. Back in March, Porsche released its eBike Sport and Cross models, which not only sported premium-grade materials and smart features, but were also among the most expensive e-bikes available on the market. While Porsche is known for its broad range in collaborations within various industries, from private jets to luxury smartwatches, it now seems to be turning its focus on bolstering its e-bike initiative.

Porsche announced that it will become a majority stakeholder of e-bike company Greyp Bikes, in a deal that will be finalized by the end of the month, via a press release. The move is said to further expand Porsche’s activity within the e-bike sector, as part of its “e-mobility strategy.” Porsche states that e-bikes have a “fixed place” in its strategy and, despite becoming Greyp Bikes’ majority shareholder, it will still continue working with Rotwild, further highlighting its growing commitment to the e-bike industry.

What To Expect From Porsche’s Future E-Bikes

Greyp Bikes’ e-bike models are touted as “the world’s first fully connected e-bikes” with features such as persistent online connection, integrated cameras, and replaceable batteries, among others. Porsche already owned about 10 percent of Greyp Bike’s shares before, but being its majority shareholder now allows it to become more involved in the design process, which could result in better e-bikes that incorporate the speed and luxury of its lineup along with Greyp Bike’s tech-heavy design. Then there’s the matter of pricing. For comparison, premium e-bike company VanMoof sells models reaching four-digit figures,

However, Porsche’s current e-bike lineup can reach even higher, ranging from $8,000 to $10,000. Greyp Bikes, on the other hand, has models that can go for as much as over $15,000. That’s more than a Ducati Monster, which is approaching luxury superbike territory. If Porsche’s future e-bikes happen to be as successful as its sold-out eBike Sport and Cross models, perhaps Lamborghini just might consider entering the e-bike market as well, after all, it’s already taking the first step into the EV industry.
