Power Rangers Reveals the Zeo Crystal is Secretly its Infinity Gauntlet

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Power Rangers #11

The Zeo Crystal is a staple in Power Rangers lore and has just been revealed to be its version of Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet. The Zeo Crystals are ancient artifacts that grow stronger with age, appearing for the first time in the 1990’s show Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers coveted by the villainous Rita Repulsa and the cause of the mutilation of Lord Zed. The only way anyone can wield the crystal is if they are fully good, though those rules seem to bend when an Eltarian is involved, which is the Power Ranger’s leader Zordon’s race of beings.

In Power Rangers #11 by Ryann Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Raul Angulo, the intergalactic team of Rangers known as the Omega Rangers are traveling the cosmos looking for a being that can help them defeat their enemies, the Empyreals. The Power Ranger they seek is the Yellow Emissary who tells them the origin of the Empyreals and the potential fate of the universe. It is revealed that an Elterian wielded the all-powerful Zeo Crystal and created the Empyreals, and will soon use its ultimate power to reshape the universe how he sees fit.

The reality-bending power of the Zeo Crystal is very much reminiscent of the Infinity Gauntlet with all six Infinity Gems. Using the cosmic stones, the wielder of the gauntlet grants the user the power of a god, one with unlimited power to alter the Marvel universe however they see fit. Now with the power of the Zeo Crystal, the Eltarian in question can implement his version of order across the cosmos, and while the usual motivations behind an Eltarian’s actions are for the betterment of life across the cosmos, as the Rangers saw first hand with Zordon, it is clear that this Eltarian may have more sinister motives.

The Yellow Emissary made it clear to the Omega Rangers that the Eltarian abandoned his race’s mission for universal order in lieu of unlimited power. The Zeo Crystal becomes more powerful the older they get and Eltarians are near-immortal beings not unlike Marvel’s Eternals and the Infinity Gems. While they don’t necessarily become more powerful with age, the Infinity Gems are some of the most powerful artifacts in the universe, and just as the Eltarian now wields the Zeo Crystal, Thanos, an Eternal with the deviant syndrome, is perhaps the most famous wielder of the Infinity Gauntlet.

The similarities are uncanny when comparing not only the Zeo Crystal to the Infinity Gauntlet but those that wield them. The Eltarian who is shown using the Zeo Crystal clearly has big plans for the universe just as Thanos did when he held the power of the Infinity Gauntlet. While it is unclear at this point to what extent the Eltarian will take the long sought after the power of the Zeo Crystal, fans can assume that based on his work with the Empyreals that it can’t be much better than the acts Thanos took with the Infinity Gauntlet, revealing that the two separate sources of unlimited cosmic energy are the same, and the Power Rangers clearly have their work cut out for them.
