Warning: spoilers ahead for Mighty Morphin #1!
BOOM! Studios has just relaunched their Power Rangers comics series with the new Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers titles. While Powers Rangers will focus on the adventures of the future Omega Rangers, Mighty Morphin will keep its focus on the original team of five Rangers (plus Tommy Oliver as the White Ranger). Despite the relaunch, the narratives will continue as they have been, albeit now with more time for each team to be adequately featured. However, Mighty Morphin #1 is also kicking things off by revealing the secret origins of Zordon, the leader of the Power Rangers. As it turns out, he wasn’t always a giant floating blue head.
In recent issues of the preceding Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, the reveal of a new Green Ranger and their true identity was the big mystery, as none of the original team knows who the new Ranger is. While Billy, the Blue Ranger, knew about the potential selection process and helped their ally Grace Sterling restore the Dragon Coin of the Green Ranger, he wasn’t privy to who Grace actually selected (though some suspect that it’s Lord Drakkon, the evil Tommy Oliver from an alternate future that Grace has locked away). It seems as though this mystery will continue beyond the first issue of Mighty Morphin, with the Rangers and readers still left in the lurch as to who might be under the green helmet, even after the Green Ranger arrived once again to help them fight a rather violent and vindictive panda bear warrior.
However, new secrets are being revealed with more to come in Mighty Morphin #1 from writer Ryan Parrott with art by Marco Renna. Much of this will have to do with Zordon, the leader of the Power Rangers and the one who first gave the Rangers their Power Coins. Apparently, Zordon once had a body of his own on his homeworld of Eltar, where he was member of a proto-version of the Power Rangers called the Guardians of Eltar. In a flashback, Zordon is revealed to be the Bronze Guardian of Eltar, protecting and serving alongside the Gold and Silver Guardians.
It seems as though more tales of Zordon’s time as the Bronze Guardian are still to come as Mighty Morphin continues, but Zordon also regales Billy with more peaceful tales of his past on Eltar, back when he still had a body. Not only that, but the end of the issue reveals that Skull’s new girlfriend Candice is actually from Eltar, working with a shadowy figure with mysterious goals, claiming that “Eltar must be protected.”
It seems as though Zordon’s past is going to be a large driving force for the present-day narrative in the series, especially with the reveal of Candice’s true nature. What other secrets might fans learn about Zordon and his homeworld, and how will it affect the Power Rangers of Mighty Morphin going forward? Fans will just have to wait and see as the newly relaunched series continues from BOOM! Studios.
