Powerful Pricey Acer Chromebook Spin 514 Vs Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2

Acer and Samsung have both unveiled new Chromebook hybrids in the days leading up to CES 2021. While both these devices will cost far more than the base Chromebook price of $249, they are advertised as premium Chromebooks with more graphical capabilities and additional features. With both these Chromebooks scheduled for a Q1 release, which is the one that customers should lean towards based on what is known thus far?

Samsung released its first Galaxy Chromebook in April last year. Coming in either gray or red, it was the first Chromebook with a 13.3-inch OLED screen. The introductory price was an eye-watering $999.99, with the company having to scrap versions that were even more expensive. Acer previously launched Chromebook Spin 713 in July 2020 for $629.99, with which they also transitioned to 16:10 display aspect ratios. An ‘Enterprise’ version is also available for $1,099, making it $100 more than the Galaxy Chromebook 1.

Both companies are looking to greatly improve from their previous 2-in-1s, which haven’t even been available for a whole year. Acer’s Chromebook Spin 514 will start at $479.99, with the company opting for new Ryzen 7 mobile chips from AMD for increased graphical capabilities. The 514 will come in gray, silver, and green. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 from Samsung will start $549.99 — a great improvement from the Galaxy Chromebook 1’s initial price. Samsung touts it as the first-ever QLED Chromebook, which offers brighter displays and helps towards the price reduction. While Acer will be releasing the Spin 514 sometime in February, the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2’s release date is still only rumored to be in February. Consumers may get clarification on each of these releases during the all-digital CES.

Which New Chromebook Will Be The Better Buy?

The Galaxy Chromebook 2 will come with two processors — a 10th Gen Intel Core i3-10110U and an Intel Celeron 5205U. Combined, these two processors get almost the same results as the 3500C found in the base Spin 514. The Spin 514 will provide better graphics, however, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 can offer faster performance. In terms of Wi-Fi speeds, the Galaxy Chromebook comes with Wi-Fi 6, which can deliver a faster 9.6 Gbps compared to Wi-Fi 5 (3.5 Gbps) that remains in the Spin 514. Acer’s tablet comes with a 14-inch screen, besting the 13.3-inch screen from Samsung’s. This however makes the Galaxy Chromebook 2 lighter at 2.7 pounds, compared to the Spin 514’s 3.4 pounds. The last notable factor may be the aspect ratio, in which Samsung insists on a 16:9 screen, inferior to Acer’s 16:10 screen.

Both hybrids certainly have advantages over one another, meaning that they can benefit users in different ways. Acer’s Chromebook Spin 514 will be a better purchase for customers that either wish to pay less, want better power, or want a bigger screen. Customers will be partial to the Galaxy Chromebook 2 if they are more interested in faster performance and internet, a smaller screen, or a lighter product to carry around. Given the price of both hybrids, though, Acer’s Spin 514 may be the better value of the two.
