With six seasons to its name, the original Powerpuff Girls often finds itself considered a cornerstone of 90’s television. Despite a few attempts to reboot the series, most fans agree that the original episodes are the definitive Powerpuff Girl experience. IMDb users have followed suit in cataloging the episodes of the show.

While the original episodes of The Powerpuff Girls all carry consistency in their quality, some episodes stand out from the rest. Whether they’re scary, inventive, or even a little ridiculous, the episodes with the highest ratings keep fans coming back for one reason or another.

10 Him Diddle Riddle (7.7)

Airing during season 4, “Him Diddle Riddle” pits the girls in a timed battle of wits against the villainous Him under the threat of Professor Utonium “paying” for their failure. Despite the seemingly high stakes of the situation, the episode proves a fun character exercise in showcasing how the Powerpuff Girls solve problems.

From fighting a monster without their powers to taking the SATs, Him’s challenges are delightfully evil as they push the girls past their limits. Even the reveal that Professor Utonium “paying” involves him paying full price for breakfast fits in with the episode’s irreverent tone, making “Him Diddle Riddle” a classic.

9 Telephonies/Tough Love (7.9)

The City of Townsville features a colorful cast of wacky and sinister Powerpuff Girl enemies, whose antics feature heavily in both these season 1 episodes. While “Telephonies” features the Gangreen Gang prank calling the Powerpuff Girls and even other villains, it’s “Tough Love” that proves the standout of the two episodes as Him turns Townsville against the Powerpuff Girls.

Not only did “Tough Love” establish Him as a major threat to the girls and Townsville with his ability to toy with others, but it also forced the girls to fight against their own family and friends. For a children’s show about crime-fighting kindergarteners, it’s shockingly heavy material.

8 Just Another Manic Mojo/Mime For A Change (7.9)

Season 1’s “Just Another Manic Mojo” puts the spotlight on the Powerpuff Girls’ archnemesis, Mojo Jojo, as he engages in a Wile E. Coyote-esque chase with the girls as his personal Roadrunners. The episode flips perspective in an entertaining way, as fans get to see Mojo’s view of the girls as both nemeses and nuisances.

“Mime For A Change,” on the other hand, introduced the fandom to the beloved song “Love Makes The World Go Round,” a musical number the girls sing to restore color to their beloved Townsville. It’s also known for the girls’ brutal beatdown of Rainbow the Clown after he already apologized for his actions.

7 The Powerpuff Girls’ Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever/Just Desserts (7.9)

While “Just Desserts” in season 2 follows up on a previous episode’s storyline by pitting the Powerpuff Girls against the villainous Smith family, “Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever” (also from season 2) is a quintessentially classic episode. It succeeds through acknowledging the Powerpuffs as otherwise regular little girls, leading to a fun slice-of-life story that even gets the Professor playing along.

The creativity shown off by the girls in portraying their own superhero antics feels appropriately childish yet hilarious for all ages. In one comedic moment clearly meant for adults, Blossom stuffs her shirt with teddy bears and puts on a pair of heels to play the part of the sensual Ms. Bellum.

6 Knock It Off (8.1)

This outstandingly disturbing episode of The Powerpuff Girls starts off innocently enough, with the Professor’s old college friend Dick Hardly arriving for a visit. As soon as Dick arrives, it becomes clear that his intentions for the girls are less-than-wholesome as he steals a flask of Chemical X and creates his own bootleg Powerpuff Girls to profit off of them.

Dick sinks so low in his quest for monetary gain that most fans consider him to be the most sinister one-off villain seen on the show. On the other hand, the season 4 episode shows Professor Utonium at his best as he works to save the girls from being exploited.

5 See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey (8.1)

On paper, a rock opera episode of Powerpuff Girls sounds completely ridiculous. In practice, it’s still a very corny idea but somehow, it just works. This episode from season 5 centers around a magical gnome that takes the girls’ powers in exchange for spreading peace throughout Townsville via enslaving the citizens in a cult of personality. The music, however, is the true highlight of the episodes.

None of the characters are particularly great singers, with the exception of the girls and the gnome. Despite this, the songs are so catchy and the characters very charismatic in their delivery that it’s difficult for fans to not tap their feet to the rhythm.

4 Bubblevicious/The Bare Facts (8.2)

Up until the premiere of “Bubblevicious,” most fans wrote Bubbles off as a cutesy comic relief character and considered her the weakest link of the girls. This season 1 episode takes those notions and throws them out, demonstrating Bubbles’ true desire to be considered as hardcore as her sisters. While some of her feats come off as exceptionally brutal, it also provides catharsis to Bubbles fans who wanted to see her taken seriously.

“The Bare Facts,” meanwhile, is a fun little episode about the girls recounting to the Mayor how they rescued him from Mojo Jojo – all while concealing the fact that Mojo stole his clothes. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it serves as a good way to cool off from its intense counterpart.

3 The Rowdyruff Boys (8.4)

The season 1 episode “The Rowdyruff Boys” had the biggest impact on the shape of the Powerpuff Girls fandom as a whole. It introduced viewers to the titular trio of terrors, created by Mojo Jojo in a bid to “fight fire with fire” and defeat the Powerpuff Girls. Viewers latched onto the boys almost immediately for their memorable designs and shipping potential with the girls.

Even though the boys were seemingly killed at the end of the episode, that didn’t stop fans from resurrecting the boys in various fanfics where they became good guys. Eventually, the boys were brought back by popular demand in later seasons, becoming reoccurring villains.

2 Speed Demon/Mojo Jonesin’ (8.6)

“Speed Demon” is wildly considered by fans to be the most frightening episode of the entire Powerpuff Girls series, and for good reason. The Powerpuff Girls inadvertently travel forwards in time to a dark future where their absence leads to a desolate Townsville ruled by Him. Him transforms into a more terrifying form and frightens the girls, who conclude that Townsville can’t handle them being gone.

“Mojo Jonesin'” is also a dark episode in how Mojo Jojo manipulates innocent classmates of the girls using Chemical X. While most fans agree “Speed Demon” is the scarier episode, both packaged together make for an intense viewing experience beyond the content of normal episodes.

1 Moral Decay/Meet The Beat-Alls (8.6)

A beloved episode of The Powerpuff Girls, “Meet The Beat-Alls” features Mojo Jojo’s zaniest yet most ingenious plan to date. He gathers a team of the most notable villains the Powerpuff Girls faced thus far and unites them as ‘the Beat-alls’ — and his plan works!

True to its title, “Meet The Beat-Alls” features numerous references to the Beatles, from quoting song lyrics to parodying their most famous album covers. It also shows that the villains faced by the Powerpuff Girls aren’t just one-note joke characters that exist to get punched around, but serious threats both in their own right and when working together.
