Praey for the Gods, an open-world adventure survival game inspired by Shadow of the Colossus, has officially been released on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Development of the ambitious boss-climbing adventure began in 2014, with a Steam early access beta launching back in January 2019. With a mysterious frozen world to explore and enormous boss monsters to overcome, many of the game’s followers have compared Praey for the Gods to Team ICO’s Shadow of the Colossus.

In developing Praey for the Gods, No Matter Studios has clearly taken a large amount of inspiration from the beloved 2005 game Shadow of the Colossus. The classic PlayStation exclusive casts gamers as Wander, a young man who trespasses into a forbidden land in an attempt to resurrect a young woman named Mono. In order to complete this seemingly impossible task, the player must locate, scale, and eventually slay sixteen massive colossi in a novel mixture of combat and puzzle-solving. Upon release, SOTC received monumental praise for its unique climbing gameplay and subtle world-building, with many considering the title an interactive work of art. In 2018 Bluepoint Games remade Shadow of the Colossus, maintaining most of the title’s classic gameplay while also recreating all of its assets using modern graphics and technology.

Developer No Matter Studios has taken to Twitter to celebrate the console release of Praey for the Gods, which follows the title’s Steam early access launch in 2019. While the gameplay is inspired by Shadow of the Colossus, Praey for the Gods also features survival and crafting mechanics which help it stand apart from its predecessor. Cast as a mysterious adventurer, players must survive a brutal frozen landscape as they track down, climb and kill a number of massive beasts. The title is also non-linear, meaning the world can be explored and bosses can be vanquished in whichever order the player chooses, which draws similarities to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

While No Matter Studios seems to have crafted a very capable successor to Shadow of the Colossus, the original game’s director is apparently working on a brand-new project of his own. Fumito Ueda, who also served as the developer of ICO and The Last Guardian, teased a new game back in January 2021. The video game auteur is known for crafting gorgeous fantasy worlds where much of the backstory, and even the game’s story itself, is left up to player interpretation. Ueda’s studio GenDesign is reportedly making this exciting new game, though no new details have been revealed in nearly a year.

Combining the truly unbelievable boss fights of Shadow of the Colossus with the expansive open world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, No Matter Studios has seemingly created a wholly unique experience with Praey for the Gods. The title’s frozen setting promises to hide numerous secrets for players to uncover, while intense encounters with godly giants will undoubtedly test players’ mettle. With the title’s console launch, Praey for the Gods can finally reach new heights.
