A trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters confirmed the existence of 17 Titans in the MonsterVerse. Here’s who we think they could be.

There are at least 17 Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which means that there are several creatures whose identities in the MonsterVerse have yet to be revealed. Four of them will clash on the big screen when Legendary’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters. Directed by Mike Dougherty, the third installment in the MonsterVerse brings together Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah for a free-for-all of epic proportions.

Previous trailers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters have revealed that there are two more Titans that will take part in the battle for supremacy. Ken Watanabe’s character, Dr. Serizawa, said in the final Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer that 17 Titans have been discovered so far. The map of the Earth on Monarch’s website seems to provide clues as to where these monsters are located. There appears to be an outpost set up for each of the Titans. Monarch has two outposts in the United States, and the rest are scattered across the world in places like Mexico, Antarctica, Australia, Peru, Colombia, the Pacific Ocean, Japan, Sudan, Egypt, Scotland, Israel, Bermuda, Cambodia, Austria, and the Strait of Gibraltar. However, a map seen in a recent promo shows that certain outposts, such as the ones in Israel and Colombia are gone, while a new one has popped up in Brazil.

Over 60 years of Godzilla history are packed with just enough kaiju to guess at the identities of the hidden Titans in the MonsterVerse. That being said, some of Godzilla’s enemies, such as Biollante and Destoroyah, are unlikely to be among them, especially since both are man-made monsters. Here are our predictions on which Titans exist somewhere in the MonsterVerse.

17. Godzilla

Godzilla is arguably the most powerful of all the Titans, though this has yet to be proven. It was revealed in the 2014 Godzilla film that the ancient alpha predator was thought to be dead after he was hit by a nuclear bomb in 1954. 60 years later, Godzilla emerged from the ocean depths to defeat two M.U.T.O.s, and now he’s back to fight on the side of humanity against the new Titans – namely King Ghidorah.

16. Gigan

Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty has expressed interest in using Gigan for Godzilla 3 if he were to return to the franchise. The villainous kaiju gave Godzilla a run for his money in Godzilla on Monster Island by giving him a brutal beating with his hook-shaped blades. Though Gigan is an alien cyborg from a distant galaxy, he could already be living somewhere on Earth, like King Ghidorah.

15. Spiga

The legs coming out of the oil field in trailers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters look like they belong to an insect. This could be a sign that Son of Godzilla’s Spiga is about to make his MonsterVerse debut. Also known as Kumonga, Spiga is a giant arachnid and one of the many residents of Monster Island in the classic Godzilla movies of the 1960s.

14. Kamacuras

Spiga isn’t the only monster that fans believe could be the creature in the oil field in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Another possibility is Kamacuras, a species of giant praying mantis. Godzilla killed three of them in Son of Godzilla.

13. Baragon

Baragon is a four-legged, horned dinosaur who burrowed underground to escape extinction millions of years ago. In Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Baragon appeared as a guardian monster. Perhaps the Orca will somehow awaken Baragon in Godzilla: King of the Monsters or prepare the Titan for another film.

12. Anguirus

Based on the Ankylosaurus, Anguirus is one of Godzilla’s closest allies. During the 1960s, Anguirus joined Godzilla in multiple battles against King Ghidorah and Gigan. Considering that there are few kaiju who have appeared in more Godzilla movies than Anguirus, it seems reasonable that he’s one of the 17 Titans. In fact, some believe Anguirus is the monster who emerged from the mountain in the trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which makes sense, considering that Anguirus was shown to be capable of living underground in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.

11. Mothra

According to the Monarch website, Mothra (Titanus Mosara) is in the Yunnan rainforest in China. The legendary Titan dwells in a place known as the “Temple of the Moth.” Mothra, who is expected to appear in multiple forms in the movie, is always depicted as a heroic, guardian figure. Her previous appearances in Toho films suggests Mothra may fight on Godzilla’s side when he goes up against King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

10. King Ghidorah

Like Godzilla, King Ghidorah (Monster Zero) is an alpha predator. He is currently on ice in a Monarch outpost in Antarctica. Based on what’s been revealed about the three-headed dragon, it’s possible that King Ghidorah was defeated by Godzilla centuries ago, which means that Godzilla and his old enemy are headed for an apocalyptic rematch.

9. Rodan

Joining the free-for-all between Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, is Rodan. Known as the King of the Skies, the MonsterVerse version of the giant pteranodon lives in the Isla de Mara volcano in Mexico. Of the four Titans confirmed to appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Rodan’s role is the most mysterious, as it’s unclear which side Rodan will be on. Marketing has hinted at a fight between Godzilla and Rodan, and trailer footage has confirmed a battle between Rodan and King Ghidorah.

8. King Kong

The Monarch outpost in the Pacific Ocean is most likely the location of Skull Island, the home of Kong. Kong, who battled Godzilla in Toho’s 1962 crossover movie King Kong vs. Godzilla, was introduced into the MonsterVerse in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and will make his second appearance in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020 – though it remains to be seen who comes out of that movie alive.

7. Ebirah

The giant lobster that Godzilla fought in 1966’s Ebirah, Horror of the Deep was never portrayed as a significant threat to the King of the Monsters, but he could be just one more Titan hiding somewhere in the ocean, as there are multiple outposts that may be attributed to this monster.

6. Megalon

In Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla battled a powerful, beetle-like kaiju who had the ability to burrow underground. Megalon was worshiped as a god in the subterranean kingdom of Seatopia. Like several of the kaiju, Megalon could be hiding almost anywhere in the MonsterVerse.

5. Manda

A Monarch outpost is curiously stationed in the North Scottish Highlands. While this feels like it could just be a reference to Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster, it could mean something else. What if one of Toho’s monsters is the Loch Ness Monster? The sea dragon kaiju, Manda, does bear at least some resemblance to the long-necked creature.

4. Gorosaurus

Gorosaurus is best remembered as the dinosaur who delivered a punishing kick against King Ghidorah in 1968’s Destroy All Monsters. Interestingly, Gorosaurus is the only monster ever who has met both Godzilla and King Kong. Gorosaurus may, then, be hinted at in the sequel film while also being saved for a full reveal in Godzilla vs. Kong.

3. King Caesar

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, King Caesar was introduced as a legendary monster devoted to protecting the people of Okinawa. King Caesar’s appearance is based on the Shisa, which are guardian lions from Chinese mythology. Since guardian lions are also present in Cambodian culture, one fan theory has tied King Caesar to the outpost in Cambodia.

2. Titanosaurus

Though peaceful by nature, the aquatic Titanosaurus is certainly a force to be reckoned with, as indicated by his vicious battle with Godzilla in Terror of Mechagodzilla when he was under the control of a mad scientist. Titanosaurus, who dwells at the bottom of the sea, could be connected to the Monarch outpost in the Bermuda Triangle.

1. Battra

As the antithesis of Mothra, Battra shares many of Mothra’s abilities. However, unlike Mothra, Battra views himself as the protector of Earth, and not of humanity. Battra has been at odds with Mothra for centuries due to his hatred of mankind. Could Mothra’s evil counterpart exist somewhere in the MonsterVerse?
