Pretty Little Liars 10 Of The Biggest Differences Between The Show & Books

As any fan of Pretty Little Liars will know, the show was based on a series of novels by Sara Shepard before they were adapted to a TV show. Both versions follow a group of friends who become the targets of a mysterious figure after the disappearance of their best friend, Alison. The show aired from 2010 through 2017 for a total of seven seasons before ending with a huge twist, while the novel series has a total of 16 books.

Even though the show followed the same basic premise as the novels with a lot of the same characters, anyone who has watched the show and read the books will know how different they truly are. Despite featuring a lot of the same characters and the same basic idea, there are some huge differences between them.

10 Alison Was Missing For 3 Years

In both versions of Pretty Little Liars, Alison was friends with the main characters and went mysteriously missing at some point before the start of the series. The mysteries of where she went and what was going on in her life before her disappearance are a major part of both versions.

In the TV version, Alison went missing one year before the start of the series and the main group of friends have drifted apart over that year. But, in the book series, the backstory is way different! Instead of being missing for a year, Alison went missing three years ago!

9 There Was No Spoby

Just about everyone who watched Pretty Little Liars had a favorite couple. Whether they stuck together through the end or didn’t make it out of the series together, these couples were adorable and we loved seeing them together. One of the main ones that a lot of fans loved was Spoby, the couple name given to Spencer Hastings and Toby Cavanaugh.

While this couple was a big part of the TV version of the show, they weren’t in the books. Toby did go to a dance with Emily, just like in the show, but that was his only semi-romantic interaction with any of the Liars in the books.

8 …And Barely Any Toby

So, why didn’t Spencer and Toby ever get together in the book series? Well, Toby was barely even in the books. Although he was a fairly large part of the TV series and a character that went from totally creepy to pretty cool, he didn’t have so much growth and development in the books.

Just like in the TV series, the books introduce Toby as Jenna’s older step-brother. In the books, he’s way creepier than he is in the series and his relationship with Jenna is hidden by some incredibly dark secrets. Fairly early in the books, Toby’s life in Rosewood becomes too much for him and he takes his own life.

7 Maya Survived!

In the TV series, Maya is introduced as the new girl that moves into Alison’s old house. She and Emily start a relationship, but Maya has some issues and ends up getting in major trouble and is sent away to a camp for troubled teens. Eventually, her stalker that she met at the camp kills her and tries to go after Emily, too.

But, Maya survived in the book! She was introduced in the same way, as a new girl to Rosewood who becomes Emily’s love interest. Unfortunately, the two of them end up breaking up after Emily is caught nearly kissing another girl, which upsets Maya. Even though they didn’t stay together, at least Maya survived!

6 …But Mona Didn’t

In the TV series, Mona is a devious character. It’s hard to tell whether she’s on the side of the Liars or the A-Team at any given point because it seems like she’s always up to something. She was in the short-lived spin-off series The Perfectionists, but she didn’t have such a good fate in the book series.

While Mona survived the show, she didn’t make it to the end of the books. In the novel version of Pretty Little Liars, Mona was accidentally pushed off a cliff by Spencer during a huge fight. The fall broke Mona’s neck and she didn’t survive.

5 Ezria Was Short-Lived

Ezria is the couple name given to Ezra Fitz and Aria Montgomery. The two had a tumultuous, forbidden relationship because they were a student and teacher, but it was made even more complicated by Ezra’s past and the fact that he knew Alison before she disappeared! Fortunately, the two of them made it work and got married.

But, they weren’t so lucky in the books. Ezra was barely in them and he didn’t know Alison before her disappearance. In the books, “A” tells Sean about their relationship and the police arrest Ezra. He gets fired and the two of them break up before Ezra moves to Rhode Island.

4 Caleb Didn’t Exist

In the TV series, Caleb Rivers is the edgy, technology-loving bad boy that helps the Liars out with phone and computer issues before he starts dating Hanna. The two of them are adorable together and we couldn’t imagine Pretty Little Liars without him!

But, people who read the books don’t have to imagine the series without Caleb. Not only does he not date Hanna in them, but he’s also actually not in them at all! Caleb was completely created for the TV series.

3 “A” Got Hanna Locked Up

Both the book and TV series feature Hanna’s struggle with an eating disorder and her recovery from it. In the TV series, Spencer finds herself temporarily institutionalized in a mental hospital, but that’s not how it goes in the book series.

Instead, Hanna is the one who finds herself in treatment. After “A” tells someone about Hanna’s eating disorder, she’s taken away to get help for it. Honestly, this would have been better than the way “A” taunted her about it in the show.

2 Emily’s Family Was Different

In the TV series, Emily is an only child who has a mother and father who is in the military. Her parents, especially her mother, are initially a somewhat disapproving of her dating girls, but they eventually come around and see her side. But in the book series, Emily’s family was actually way different.

In the books, Emily has three siblings and her family is way less approving of her lifestyle. They try to send her to a church youth group to get her to change and at one point, they send her away to live with family. Luckily, just like in the TV series, they eventually come around.

1 Alison Was “A”

In both the TV show and the books, what happened to Alison and who was sending all those messages and gifts was a huge mystery. As it turns out, Alison is actually alive in both. In the TV series, she returns to Rosewood and reunites with her friends.

But in the books, the Liars find out that the Alison they were friends with was Alison’s twin sister. The real Alison is alive and looking to make the lives of the Liars miserable.
