Hanna Marin is a unique part of Pretty Little Liars. With a roll of her eyes and snarky comment, this main character can really change the mood in a room, and while she’s in danger along with her friends, it always feels like she can make it through.

Hanna is a different, much older person by the series’ end, and she and Caleb Rivers find their way back to each other. But before Hanna can truly be happy, she experiences more pain and loss than most teenagers do, and PLL fans remember every heartbreaking moment.

10 Her Parents Get Divorced And Her Dad Has A New Family

The parents on Pretty Little Liars can be strange, but least Hanna’s mom Ashley cares a lot about her.

The same thing can’t be said of Hanna’s dad. One of the saddest things that has happened to Hanna is watching her parents get divorced and then realizing that her dad has a whole new family. He isn’t there for Hanna, ignores her, and even says that he’s going to fund her stepsister Kate’s college education instead of hers. This is heartbreaking and so unfair.

9 “A” Almost Kills Her At Least Twice

By the time Hanna is kidnapped in season 6, it was almost too much to take. Fans watched “A” hit Hanna with a car in the first season and try to end her life once again a few years later.

This is incredibly sad, as Hanna is still so young when the show ends. She has her whole life ahead of her and she wants to marry Caleb and have kids with him. She definitely doesn’t deserve to have her life and dreams cut short because her friend group is being targeted.

8 Caleb Leaves For Ravenswood

While Hanna is a fashionista and Caleb doesn’t have much of a sense of style, the two lovebirds are still really good together. Even though Hanna has been a “cool girl” at school, she doesn’t think that she really fits in, and Caleb’s got a rebel vibe about him.

That’s why it’s so tragic when Caleb decides to move away to Ravenswood. This is the impetus for the PLL spin-off, but Caleb should realize that his home is wherever Hanna is. Thankfully, he figures that out later on and they remain a favorite love story.

7 She Had An Eating Disorder And “A” Taunts Her With It

In the season 1 episode “Know Your Frenemies,” Hanna has to consume some treats because “A” wants her to, and she remembers when she was suffering from an eating disorder.

This is really hard for Hanna to deal with and since it’s tough for her to be vulnerable around her mom, friends, and even Caleb, she doesn’t really open up to anyone. It’s truly evil that “A” thinks this is an appropriate way to deal with Hanna, as no one should prey on someone’s sad feelings and insecurities like this.

6 People Think Hanna Killed Mona

It’s scary when Hanna and her pals are on their way to jail because people think that they killed Mona or at least helped someone do it. And then the most terrifying moment on PLL happens: the liars are put in a dollhouse.

Hanna has a tough relationship with Mona as they used to be so close, and the fact that someone thinks she would have murdered her is heartbreaking. While Hanna doesn’t fully trust her anymore, she would never do something like that.

5 Hanna And Caleb Move To NYC And It’s A Disaster

A PLL reboot is happening and it makes sense that more stories could be told as the original series is so stylish and mysterious.

All of the characters dress nicely but Hanna really treats every day like a fashion show, and she even moves to New York City for her dream job in the industry. (Or at least, it’s the job before the dream job.) But when Hanna and Caleb move away together, it’s a disaster and they become like strangers, resulting in their painful break-up. This is so sad as fans believe they’re soulmates.

4 Hanna Learns Mona Is “A”

Hanna’s former BFF Mona is the first “A” on the show, and while Mona is responsible for many cruel actions, she and Hanna still care about one another.

When Hanna finds out that Mona has been targeting them, it’s horrifying and hard for her to come to terms with. This is as bad as finding out that another liar was the one doing all of these terrible things.

3 Her Mom Almost Takes The Fall For Darren’s Death

No one would consider Darren Wilden to be their favorite character, and his affair with Hanna’s mom Ashley becomes a big problem.

Ashley almost takes the fall for his death as she ends up in jail in the fourth season. This one of the saddest things that happens to Hanna, as no one should see a parent be arrested for a murder they didn’t commit.

2 Her Engagement Breaks Up

A huge part of Hanna’s story near the end of Pretty Little Liars is her engagement to Jordan.

Even viewers who never shipped this couple can admit that breaking off an engagement is truly sad for everyone involved. This is one of the hardest things that Hanna goes through, as she’s torn between her imagined future with Jordan and whether she’s still deeply in love with Caleb.

1 She Watches Her Best Friend Fall For Caleb

Spencer and Caleb actually start a serious relationship, and it’s one of the biggest moments on the show.

While Hanna says it’s fine, is that really how she feels? Since Hanna and Caleb do ride off into the sunset together (with visions of “A” dancing in their heads but thankfully in the past), it’s hard to imagine Hanna really being cool about it. Watching her best friend fall for her soulmate is definitely horrible.
