There’s a long list of teen dramas with adult characters who are just as interesting as their kids. From Dawson’s Creek to The O.C., these beloved shows featured parents who split up, had affairs, were involved in shady business deals, or went through some personal struggles. Pretty Little Liars is another teen series with grown-ups who actually had their own storylines and they were always compelling.

Not every plot twist on PLL was good, but it was still enjoyable to see what the liars and their friends and family were up to in each episode. In some cases, the liars’ moms and dads had more dramatic things going on than the high schoolers.

10 When Ashley Slept With Darren Because Hanna Shoplifted

Hanna had a hard time at the start of the series and shoplifted in season 1. Ashley helped her out by sleeping with Detective Darren Wilden.

This was dramatic, juicy, and also smart, as Ashley would have done all that she could to get Hanna out of a bind. This was just one reason why the first season of PLL was so entertaining, as all of the liars were hiding something and their secrets were slowly coming out. While it was exciting to watch Hanna, Ashley’s storyline was much more thrilling.

9 When Byron Cheated On Ella With A Student

Aria always loved her parents, but they didn’t make life very easy for her. Byron was unhappy about Ezra, Aria’s older love interest, though he hardly set an example for his daughter.

It was awful when Byron cheated on his wife Ella with Meredith. This was definitely a time when the parents’ on PLL had storylines that were better than anything the teens were going through, as Aria learned about this affair and Byron didn’t want her to let Ella know. Aria was under a lot of pressure and her parents had a difficult marriage.

8 When Ashley Was Arrested For Darren’s Murder

Pretty Little Liars 10 Times The Parents Storylines Were Better Than The Teens

In the fourth season, Ashley was arrested for Darren’s murder, and it was tough watching Hanna struggle with that. Hanna’s dad was never around so Ashley was really her only family.

While some of the other liars were also accused of murder at various times on the show, this was still a big moment as Ashley faced some serious prison time if she was found guilty. It was another reminder of how dangerous it could be to live in Rosewood as everyone was often considered a suspect.

7 When Ashley Stole From Her Office

Ashley Marin worked at a bank and when she needed money, she actually stole it from some clients.

Hanna’s parents’ divorce was hard on her and it was also difficult for her to live with her mom at times. While Ashley was a wonderful and caring parent, she sometimes did the wrong thing for the right reason and didn’t really think about any consequences. This was a thrilling storyline to watch as no one was sure how much trouble Ashley would get into for this crime.

6 When Jessica Buried Her Own Daughter Alive

Jessica DiLaurentis brought up Alison and her brother Jason and also adopted Charlotte. She also made a huge mistake that was super disturbing: she buried her daughter Alison alive.

Jessica did this because Charlotte thought Ali was Bethany Young and had hurt her. Ali escaped and ran away, and this started the dark story of her disappearance. This was a much more disturbing storyline than many things that had happened to the teens. It’s hard to imagine comparing anything that Spencer, Hanna, Aria, or Emily went through with this tale.

5 When Pam Faced The Loss Of Her Husband

Emily suffered after her dad passed away and her mother, Pam, was absolutely heartbroken.

While the liars all had serious romances during the show’s seven seasons and Emily said goodbye to her girlfriend Maya, it’s incredibly tragic for someone to lose their spouse. This death was particularly sad because Wayne died while away at war. Although this was a really tragic storyline, it was one of the best on the show as it humanized Pam and helped viewers empathize with her.

4 When Pam Supported Emily And Paige

Pam should have supported Emily from the moment she found out she was gay, but she thankfully realized her initial reaction was wrong and she ultimately showed Emily that she loved her.

Pam had a great storyline when she learned that Paige’s parents support her sexuality. She told Paige’s dad that he was wrong for feeling that way and that he should change his tune. This was an emotional scene and proved that Emily had a strong, caring mother.

3 When Veronica Hid The Truth About Spencer’s Mom

Pretty Little Liars 10 Times The Parents Storylines Were Better Than The Teens

Spencer’s character arc on PLL involved learning that Veronica Hastings that wasn’t her birth mother. Her biological mother Mary Drake, and Spencer’s family history was really sad and dark.

This was a huge reveal for the characters and something that Veronica had to live with for most of Spencer’s young life. Once the secrets started coming out, Veronica had to confess the truth about her family.

2 When Ashley Got Engaged To Pastor Ted, Who Was Charlotte’s Dad

Pretty Little Liars 10 Times The Parents Storylines Were Better Than The Teens

Hanna’s mom Ashley is sweet and yet she went down a dark road when she got engaged to Pastor Ted. As it turned out, he wasn’t as kind and innocent as everyone thought, and he had some ties to Charlotte DiLaurentis.

In fact, Ted was Charlotte’s dad, which was a huge twist. In the season 7 episode “Power Play,” Ted knew exactly where Mary Drake was: she was living at his home and he was doing his best to make sure that no one knew. This was a super dramatic storyline and much more interesting than anything the liars were dealing with that season. It was crazy for Ashley to come close to marrying someone who had so many dark secrets.

1 When The Moms Got Trapped In The Basement

After the sixth season, fans were abuzz about one particularly wild moment and it didn’t involve the main characters at all.

Ella, Pam, Ashley, and Veronica were all in the basement of the DiLaurentis house and Uber A made sure that they couldn’t get out. No one was sure how they escaped as it was never mentioned again… until the end of the show. The mothers were talking about it and Ella said, “Sometimes, I wish we were still in the basement” and Ashley said, “You know, Pam didn’t drink for a whole year after that.” This storyline was a great combination of funny and thrilling.
