While she was a mean Queen Bee at the beginning of the popular teen drama, she learned to become a better person by the finale, but along the way, fans had many questions about her motivation and reasoning. Ali often wanted to manipulate others, which made her a great fictional character but a terrible friend.

Fans had to process a lot about Ali’s time away from Rosewood, as her story of why she left is a complex one, but when she returned, it didn’t change her mean girl reputation. While Ali’s actions hurt a lot of people, she also proved herself to be a kind person in other instances.

10 Pure Evil: When She Orchestrated “The Jenna Thing”

In season 1 of Pretty Little Liars, fans found out about what the characters referred to as “The Jenna Thing.” Ali wanted revenge on Toby, who she said was staring at her while she got changed in her room, and his step-sister Jenna lost her eyesight. This was a horrible prank and one of the most disturbing things that Ali ever did. It’s impossible to sympathize her in this situation, as she was too caught up in her mean girl ways and love of popularity to care about other people at this point in her life. Emily’s two main love interests are Ali and Paige, and by season 7 of the show, fans finally saw the relationship that they had been waiting for. Ali told Emily that she loved her, and it was an important moment in her character arc, as she finally saw how much Emily meant to her. While Ali was cruel in high school, she proved herself to be vulnerable in the last few seasons of PLL, and fans appreciated seeing a friendlier, softer side of this character. Fans learned that Mona’s motivation for being the first A is the fact that Ali used to bully her. Ali was pure evil when she bullied Mona, and there was no legitimate reason for her to act this way. Mona just wanted to be accepted, and all Ali had to do was invite Mona to some gatherings and sleepovers, or let Mona sit with the group at lunch. Mona would have been thrilled with those invitations, but Ali was too concerned with being in control of everyone.

7 Sweet: When She And Emily Got Engaged And Raised Twin Babies

While Emily always had feelings for Ali, it took Ali much longer to appreciate how real their bond was, and they finally began dating. It was sweet and heartwarming to watch these characters get engaged and raise their twin babies in the final episode. It was a happy ending that was a long time coming, and it felt like Ali took everything she had experienced and brought it to her relationship. Ali would always remember the pain she was in and her many near-death experiences, but she was compassionate enough now to be with Emily for good.

6 Pure Evil: When She Insisted On Being In Charge In Season 5

At the beginning of season 5 of Pretty Little Liars, Ali wanted to be in control of the liars, and she assumed that things could go back to the way that they were before she ran away from Rosewood. In the episode ‘Thrown From The Ride,’ Ali had a lie that she hoped the other characters would tell the police, but Spencer wasn’t so certain about it. This is another example of Ali being a super harsh person, as she should have understood that the other girls were growing up and becoming more confident with who they were. They were different from the people they used to be and they weren’t going to blindly follow her anymore.

5 Sweet: When She Saved The Liars From The Dollhouse

Fans recall the horror of watching the liars stuck in the dollhouse, and Ali worked with Caleb, Ezra, and Toby to save them. They were successful, and this was a moment when Ali was actually a nice person. She could have said that from what she knew of A.D. and their helpers, it was too dark and dangerous to get involved, but she was determined to save her friends’ lives. It was a big deal for Ali to think of people other than herself and this was a turning point for her character arc.

4 Pure Evil: When She Used The Liars’ Secrets Against Them

Before disappearing from the creepy town of Rosewood, Ali knew a lot of deep, dark secrets about her best friends. She knew that Melissa’s fiance kissed Spencer, that Aria’s dad Byron was having an affair, and that Hanna had an eating disorder.

Instead of appreciating that her friends trusted her with the hardest parts of their lives, Ali manipulated everyone and used the liars’ secrets against them. She always let them know that she could tell anyone the truth at any moment, and the liars hated this about her. Even fans of PLL who like Ali can admit that this wasn’t the most flattering time in her life.

3 Sweet: When She Taught At Rosewood High And Married Archer

When Ali married Archer Dunhill, she had no clue that he was really Elliot Rollins and that he was an evil person manipulating her. In season 6, she taught at Rosewood High and thought that she was finally living a normal life. She seemed to have it all, from the job to the fiance, and fans saw a soft, sweet side of Ali here. She wasn’t trying to hurt anyone or seem more popular than everyone else. Unfortunately for Ali, she got involved with the wrong person, and Archer made sure that she ended up in the hospital and that she was put in harm’s way.

2 Pure Evil: When She Pretended To Be In Trouble On Halloween

In the season 2 episode ‘The First Secret,’ the main characters went to a Halloween party that was more than they bargained for. Ali texted her friends “I’m in trouble, come alone” and they found her appearing to be locked in a room. She said someone wanted her dead, and moments later, the liars thought that they saw someone trying to murder Ali. It turned out that Ali and Noel were setting them up and trying to be funny. It’s impossible to like Ali here, as this isn’t anywhere near hilarious, and it’s a good example of her lower moments on the show.

1 Sweet: When Mona Lied To Her About Needing To Run Away

The most pressing mystery on Pretty Little Liars was why Ali left Rosewood and what happened to her. The liars later learned that Mona lied to Ali, telling her to run away because A was going to murder her. The truth was that Mona was A and she wanted to be the most popular person at school so it was more convenient for Ali to disappear. This is one of the meanest things that Mona did and it was a time when Ali was sweeter than usual. She was scared and vulnerable and now the tables were turned, as Mona was in control and Ali had no clue what would come next.
