Got a secret, can you keep it? Pretty Little Liars is undeniably one of the best teen dramas of the 2010s. For seven seasons, fans sat on the edges of their seats every week in suspense, trying to figure out what would happen next for the titular Liars. How was “A” going to torment them next?

Some of the most dramatic moments happened during the show’s season finales. In addition, the show had mid-season finales that had shocking reveals, which might justify their own separate list. The writers knew just what to do to keep viewers engaged and waiting for the next season. Like most shows, Pretty Little Liars had great season finales, while others were not as exciting. This should go without saying, but major spoilers ahead, of course.

7 “’Til Death Do Us Part” (Season 7)

The seventh season of Pretty Little Liars was an emotional roller coaster. The Liars accidentally murdered Alison DiLaurentis’ psycho husband, and trying to cover up their mistake only led to more trouble. Spencer Hastings finds out she was adopted and meets her birth mother, Mary Drake.

All of this leads up to the series finale, “’Til Death Do Us Part,” in which fans find out that Spencer actually has a twin sister who has been acting as “A.D.” She has been impersonating Spencer and abducted her to assume her identity completely. The finale is intense, but many fans were disappointed. It was confusing and it ended the show with too many unanswered questions.

6 “Hush, Hush, Sweet Liars” (Season 6)

The show’s sixth season revealed the biggest mystery of the series— the identity of “A.” In the mid-season finale, viewers finally learned who had been tormenting the Liars for six seasons straight. “A” was revealed as CeCe Drake, which was a disappointing twist for many fans.

Later, CeCe was murdered and a new villain appeared in Rosewood, known as “A.D.” The Liars tried to outsmart her in the season finale, “Hush, Hush, Sweet Liars,” but their plans backfired when Hanna Marin is abducted by “A.D.” It was an exciting episode, but not as thrilling as other season finales.

5 “For Whom The Bell Tolls” (Season 1)

Typically, a show’s first season is good but not the best of a series, as all of the tedious character origins and world building has to be taken care of first. This is also true with Pretty Little Liars. Luckily, things had really picked up by the season one finale, “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”

When Spencer goes to the church to retrieve Melissa’s cellphone, she encounters Melissa’s suspicious husband, Ian Thomas, who has been involved in the “A” game. He threatens to kill Spencer, but instead, he’s pushed down the bell tower by a dark-hooded figure and seems to have died. However, when police arrive, Ian’s body has mysteriously vanished, a classic TV cliffhanger move.

4 “A DAngerous GAme” (Season 3)

The show’s third season had one of the most shocking plot twists of the series, implying that Spencer’s boyfriend, Toby Cavanaugh, might be “A.” When Spencer discovers this, she unravels and is forced to become a patient at Radley Sanitarium. It’s heartbreaking because the Liars need Spencer, the group’s best clue solver.

In season finale “A DAngerous GAme,” the Liars try to figure out the identity of the “A” ally known as Red Coat. It ends in disaster when the girls are trapped inside a burning lodge. They’re miraculously pulled out of the fire and Hanna thinks she saw Alison, which confuses and shocks the girls.

3 “‘A’ Is For Answers” (Season 4)

For four seasons straight, the Liars had questions about what happened to Alison. Well, in the season four finale, “‘A’ Is for Answers,” they finally get the answers they’ve needed about the night Alison disappeared. It was a satisfying episode that answered many of the lingering questions and plot holes.

As they keep discovering clues and answers about the events of the past four seasons, “A” appears and tries to kill the girls. When they flee to the roof, Aria’s on-and-off-again boyfriend, Ezra Fitz, comes to the rescue and lets himself get shot in the chest instead of the Liars, leaving fans to wonder if they were about to say goodbye to one of their favorite characters.

2 “UnmAsked” (Season 2)

For many fans, the season two finale “UnmAsked” was the first truly suspenseful episode of Pretty Little Liars. The Liars have been trying to determine who “A” was for two seasons, and they finally discover “A’s” special lair where he/she works. Later that night during a masquerade ball, Spencer goes to the lair with Mona Vanderwaal, and Spencer starts putting together the pieces of the mystery.

However, she ultimately finds out Mona has been tricking the Liars all along. She’s supposedly “A,” and she knocks Spencer unconscious, threatening to kill him.

1 “Welcome To The Dollhouse” (Season 5)

In season five finale “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” the Liars have been arrested for being accessories in Mona’s “murder.” But while they’re being transported to a different prison, “A” abducts the girls and they wake up in a real-life dollhouse. They’re living inside exact replicas of their bedrooms and there is no way for them to escape.

The Liars are physically tortured many times throughout this episode. It seems “A” has finally won, and the girls are his/her dolls. Just when the girls manage to flee the dollhouse, they discover they’re surrounded by an electric fence. They can’t escape, and fans had to wait several months to find out what happened next.
