Pretty Little Liars created some of the most complex characters a series has ever seen, and it was often hard to keep up with their ever-changing personalities. Despite this, the characters all had core personality traits that defined them.

Spanning for seven years, the show centered around four girls who were tormented by an unknown figure after their friend disappeared. Whilst honesty was no one’s top personality trait, each main character had distinctive characteristics, and all delivered quotes that perfectly summarised the type of person they were.

10 Ashley Marin

“I Will Take Care Of It Honey.”

Characters in PLL often went through distinctive changes that made their personalities hard to establish, however, Ashley was always one of the good ones. She sometimes made questionable choices; however, it was usually because of her need to protect Hanna.

Ashley was a workaholic; however, Hanna was always her main priority. When she was aware that Hanna was in trouble, she always tried to help her, going as far as sleeping with Detective Wilden to stop him from pressing charges against Hanna. This quote epitomizes Ashley’s personality and her desire to protect her daughter.

9 Caleb Rivers

“Most Of My Life I Felt Alone, Even When I Was With People. That Was Until I Met You.”

Caleb didn’t have the best upbringing and often shut people out when they tried to help him. When he was first introduced in season one, he was a loner who didn’t have any interest in forming relationships.

As his character developed, he became very serious and was always protective of Hanna. Their relationship wasn’t always straightforward; however, it was a core part of both their personalities and they were one of PLL’s fans’ favorite couples. Hanna was the first person in Caleb’s life that he fully trusted and he often acknowledges that.

8 Toby Cavanaugh

“I May Have Broken My Left Arm, But My Right Arm Is Fine.”

When he was first introduced, Toby was made out to be a villain, however, it wasn’t long before his gentle nature became apparent. Toby always tried to do the right thing and his protective instincts always came to the surface when it came to Spencer.

When Toby became a police officer, he revealed that the reason behind it was so that he could always keep Spencer safe. After Wren kissed Spencer, Toby openly threatened him. This showed the effect Spencer had on him and proved how much he cared for her.

7 Ezra Fitz

“I Have A Masters Degree In American Literature. There Is Nothing I Can’t Handle.”

Ezra was an English teacher at Rosewood High who had a passion for reading and writing. He was part of some of the most memorable PLL storylines and although his intentions were sometimes uncertain, he was always playing for the right side.

Despite being her teacher at the time, Ezra quickly fell in love with Aria and their relationship remained a central focus throughout the series. When a body ended up Aria’s boot, this was Ezra’s response. A dead body is enough to make anyone run, however, it demonstrates his desire to help Aria, as well as his intelligence.

6 Mona Vanderwaal

“You’re Not Crazy, You’re As Sane As I Am.”

Mona’s personality was arguably the most complex out of every character and her loyalties were almost impossible to distinguish. After she was revealed as A, she went through some sort of redemption, however, it was still unknown whether she was genuine.

When Spencer got locked up in Radley, Mona told her that she was as sane as she was. It’s hard to know what this quote means because, at one point, Mona was as far from sane as a person could be, which is why this sums her up in one.

5 Alison DiLaurentis

“When I Hide Something It Stays Hid, Until I Want It Found.”

It was difficult to know whether Ali was the protagonist or antagonist of the show. In the first few seasons, it was arguable that her character was nothing less than pure evil. She often kept fans on the edge of their seats due to her mysterious nature and her natural ability to manipulate people.

One thing that was for certain, Ali kept some of the biggest secrets. On the surface she was the confident queen bee, however, her complex personality meant she had many insecurities. Despite this, she was devious and often got what she wanted, something this quote encompasses.

4 Hanna Marin

“I Can’t Go Around Without A Phone. That’s Like Going Around Without A Brain… Or Shoes.”

Hanna was the character that offered a light in the girls’ darkest times. Hanna often said what fans were thinking and provided the most light-hearted and comical moments that balanced out the tone of the show.

Although she started as the most innocent and timid liar, she eventually turned into the funny and witty Hanna that fans know and love. She was arguably the most relatable character on the show and if anyone was going to compare a phone to a brain or shoes, it would be Hanna.

3 Aria Montgomery

“Look, When You Love Someone, It’s Worth Fighting For. No Matter What The Odds.”

Aria was bold and the most creative of the girls. She was often one to take risks, as shown by her relationship with Ezra which became a core part of who she was.

Their relationship was always the topic of debate as she was his student, but despite this, fans always wanted them to go the distance. Even though they got married in the last episode, the odds were stacked against them right from the beginning. Aria was always headstrong, and this quote highlights her determination.

2 Spencer Hastings

“I Like Being Certain. Okay, It’s Where I’m Comfortable.”

Spencer was by far the most intelligent of the liars and often found it difficult to live up to the expectations set on her. She was fiercely loyal and was always the one the girls turned to when they needed a logical explanation about something.

Remaining one of the strongest characters throughout the seven seasons, it could be argued that she is PLL’s main character. Her core personality traits never changed and one thing that is assured about Spencer; she likes being right and is hardly ever wrong.

1 Emily Fields

“If He’s Such A Bad Guy, Why’d He Take The Fall For Us?”

Emily was innocent and often considered to be the kindest liar. Her caring and compassionate nature was something that always remained within her character. She was included in many storylines, including her coming out story which was pivotal to her character’s development.

Emily was the most sympathetic of the group and always tried to find the good in people. When the whole town was against Toby because they were convinced he had something to do with Ali’s disappearance, Emily was the only person that tried to see past all the lies and give him the benefit of the doubt.
